R.I.P Ian Smith - 1919-2007

"We were right, and the world can see that this (Mugabe's Zimbabwe) is an absolute disaster."

Proud recipient of the for excellence and African relevance

The UDI story has been told many times over by politicians, soldiers and the suchlike - one being Ian Smith's memoirs, "The Great Betrayal".

But the everyday stories of life and love under the gun lie locked in people's private memories - and in photograph albums put away in the bottom drawer.

We invite you, and anybody you know who was there, to contribute, in an attempt to tell the story of how everyday Rhodesians "soldiered on" regardless.

Many of the pictures you see on this site were taken by the then freelance photojournalist William Higham [email protected] . This site would have proved impossible to produce without his extensive archive of photographs and negatives from that era. Over the years a number of people have contributed to the site. My thanks to them.
