Teachers Go Nuts

By Rhiannon Sims and Kylie Wallace

High above the sea of red, blue and white uniformed students, a rogue group of teachers lurked in the English block workroom, escaping the gruelling normality that they must conform to for the most part of the year. It is only on this one special day a year, in which the more flamboyant of the teachers rise to the occasion of being the most original and best-dressed character from a book or movie. This day also marks the beginning of English Week, which is held annually for one week at the end of term two.

On this day, there were a variety of costumes on display, each more colourful, interesting and definitely more bizarre than the last. However, no matter what shape or form the costumes came in, students were entertained, delighted and astounded to say the least, by the unusual teacher activity they observed.

Alongside the English teachers, there were a select few teachers and even a few students around the school who were game enough to join the troop and parade around in their most imaginative outfit. Even Mr Rapson pulled off a good imitation of the one and only Sherlock Holmes. Some of the other characters which appeared on that Monday were Stanley Yelnats from Holes, Pippi Longstockings, Captain Jack Sparrow, Dorothy, a Fairy from Midsummer Night's Dream, Wally from Where's Wally books, Neo from the Matrix, a Pink Lady from Grease, Paddington Bear, the Cat in the Hat and that's not all.

It was quite easy to tell that many of the teachers quite fancied themselves in their unusual attire, and who wouldn't, given their creativity, and the fact that they managed to pull off this difficult task perfectly and with a lot of laughs.

All in all, the day was outlandish, extraordinary and very humourous. The teachers looked as if they were enjoying themselves immensely, strutting their stuff around school and definitely enjoying the attention, as if they were parading along a catwalk.

After the success of this year's English Week, all I can say is bring on English Week 2005!
