| Ambleside, just east of the Onkaparinga River bridge, was once the getting-off point for Hahndorf, the German Town two kilometres away over the hill. In fact, during the second world war, Hahndorf's name was temporarily changed to Ambleside, along with several other German names which were Anglicised, as some still are (e.g. Blumberg is now Birdwood, Lobethal was, for a while during the war, Tweedvale, no doubt derived from the Onkaparinga Woollen Mills situated in the town). Later, Ambleside was a loop, and then that was closed too. The old railway cottages still exist, as does the station site, complete with an old privvy, but not much else. |
