Atualmente vive com sua esposa - Maria - e sua filha, Manon St. John Smith,
nascida em 3 de março de 1997.
Segundo uma entrevista com
Chad (de 1997), todos na sua família são "gênios musicais". Chad começou a tocar bateria bem cedo. Ele tinha mais ou menos 8 anos quando teve sua primeira lição.
Em
1988/89 os Peppers estavam procurando um baterista, já que Jack Irons havia deixado o grupo. Uns 30 bateristas foram testados, mas nenhum era bom o bastante. Finalmente,
p/ a sorte de todos, eis que apareceu um grandalhão de 1,90 para fazer o teste.
Chad tentou e encaixou-se perfeitamente...os Peppers ficaram impressionados com
o estado dos aros da bateria após o teste, pois os mesmos estavam todos
torcidos. Além disso, ele era também um dos bateristas mais barulhentos que os Chilis já haviam ouvido...
