Performance

A former student of Rey de la Torre, Carlos Barbosa-Lima, and David Starobin, and a 2006 Japan Fulbright scholar, Dr. Robert Phillips has embraced a wide range of repertory preferences. His eclectic programming has excited audiences throughout the U.S., the Middle East and Canada. Robert has brought his brilliant interpretations to a diverse range of venues - from traditional concert halls to jazz nightclubs.

His sold out performances include

  • Weill Recital Hall at Carnegie Hall,
  • Manhattan's prestigious Town Hall (where guitar-greats including Andres Segovia and Julian Bream have played).

In addition to his own fine compositions, Robert's repertoire includes works by:

  • Philip Glass, Alan Hovhaness, Eberhard Weber, and Thelonius Monk, as well as works by
  • Ned Rorem, Benjamin Britten, Frank Martin, Luciano Berio, and in a more traditional vein
  • Albeniz, Villa-Lobos, Tarrega, Ponce, Bach, Vivaldi, Scarlatti, and others. He has premiered works by
  • Troy Gifford (winner of the 1999 GFA set piece competition), Frank Brazinski, Eric Ross, Alfred Giusto as well as an important new guitar sonata written for him by Meyer Kupferman.

Robert's debut CD, "Guitarre Nouveau" has attracted enthusiastic reviews, and has received airplay on both classical and jazz and new age radio stations. His 2 CD companion recording to his anthology, Great Themes and Variations for Classic Guitar is distributed internationally by Mel Bay Publications.

Journalism

As contributing editor to Guitar magazine from 1989 through 1992 Robert has influenced a generation of young guitarists. During that time, he also contributed regular columns to Guitar's quarterly sister publication, Guitar Extra. His monthly instructional columns, "Classics Illustrated", have been reprinted by Cherry Lane Music Company, and released in book form.

Robert has also contributed instructional columns to Guitar Player and a number of extensive articles in Soundboard. Dr. Phillips' doctoral dissertation on the influence of Miguel Llobet, and his discovery of a long missing Llobet archive have cast new light on one of the giants of 20th century guitar.
