The Sea Witch
The American clipper ships, used mostly from 1845-1855, revolutionized overseas trade. Even though the phenomenon of Yankee clippers lasted only about a decade, they are memorialized still today in paintings, pictures, and as models inside bottles. These new clipper ships were created first as way to go from port to port in a much speedier fashion with their narrow design. Later on, in accordance with the California gold rush and the end of the Opium War in China, these clippers were used increasingly more to ship goods overseas. Cargo on these ships included tea, gold, opium, coffee, and slaves. The use of these clipper ships throughout the 1850s created an economic boom in America until they became obsolete with the creation of steamboats.
