| Gallinagh to Galanaugh Connection Established Gallinagh - Original spelling of family name. Pronounced: GAL - YIN - OCK (see1 below) (emphasis on middle syllable and guttural sound to last syllable) Galanaugh - spelling used by most of the descendents of Daniel J. Galanaugh, champion sculler, and first son of the family that emigrated to North America in 1864, eventually settling in the vicinity of Philadelphia, PA. Many of the descendents of Daniel and his 12 siblings remain in Pennsylvania and neighboring states such as New Jersey, Delaware and New York. Pronounced: GAL - AN - AWE (emphasis on first syllable) Possible variants include: (see 2 below) Gallanagh Gallenagh Gallinaugh Gallanaugh Gallenaugh Galinagh Galinaugh Galanaugh Galenaugh Gallanough The family of Edward Gallinagh and Mary Ann McLenehan, who were married on October 11, 1856, at St. Michael's Church, in Moville, (Inishowen Peninsula) in the northernmost part of County Donegal, immigrated first to St. John, NB, Canada, in 1864, and then to Philadelphia in 1886. The spelling of the name was changed to Gallanaugh in Canada, which was used as the recorded name at the death of Mary Ann in 1893. However, at the death of Edward, in 1897, the name is recorded as Galanaugh (see 3 below). NOTES: 1. According to Tony Gallinagh of Stranolar - Ballybofey, Co.
