Historical Background
The Folk Group Of Macieira da Lixa was founded in 1984 to preserve regional ethnography and tradition. By seeing its performances you can appreciate old wedding, Sunday and rich farmer’s clothes, as well as traditional customs wore by people to go to fairs and to the mass. All the pieces of clothing are associated to songs and dances, recovered with the help of old people, who still remember how it was done in their grandparent’s time. This way we can assure you we are reproducing old traditions as they really happened in the past.
The origin of the name “Macieira” comes from “apple tree” in portuguese language, because there were lots of those trees in the village. This place, Macieira, is also famous for its green wine and its handmade embroideries.
The Folk Group of Macieira has already prefomed in very important festivals and occasions, such as United Nations Celebration in Portugal, Oporto – Capital of Culture, and at the European Parliament in Brussels, among others.
Macieira Folk Group is registered in the Portuguese Federation of Folklore and INATEL – Oporto District. In this region you can see and relax in its beautiful landscapes, as well as visiting its shoe factories, buy the famous craft embroideries, and taste its finest green wines, unique in the world.
Through its activity, Folk Group of Macieira, wishes to broaden bonds of friendship all over the world, showing a piece of original folk portugues culture.
We are looking forward to visit your beautiful country for a performance. (Our group has 45 elements.)
