North Eugene (also known as NEHS, or just North) serves students from the River Road and Santa Clara areas of Eugene. Basically, if you live west of the Willamette River, north of Chambers Street, east of the Northwest Expressway or south of Beacon Street, you're in NEHS territory. The school was built in 1957 to serve Colin Kelly Junior High (see more info about North's history here). Currently, the school population is approximately 1,300 students.
The school's curriculum is very good, in my opinion. Freshmen students are enrolled in a program called House, where they take English class and Global Studies class with two teachers who teach House in pairs. House classes are at the same time each day, with the two subjects alternating between days. After house, there are certain requirements for each class of students. Sophomores must take U.S. Government and Sophomore English. Juniors must take an English class and U.S. History. Seniors take Economics and Senior Global Issues.
The departments at North include English, Social Studies, Art, P.E., Foreign Language, Industrial Arts, Music, Home Economics, Math, Science and Business/Computers. In addition to the regular curriculum, there are Advanced Placement classes available. These include AP English, Chemistry, Biology, History, Spanish, French and Calculus. North's students have a history of doing very well in these advanced classes.
