HAMMONDS OF MARBLEHEAD, MASS.
It has been impossible to get any connected or authentic account of the Hammonds of Marblehead prior
to about 1709. There are undoubtedly several distinct families in Marblehead and vicinity descended
from different emigrant ancestors. It is possible that some of these are descendants of John Hammond,
the early settler in Gloucester, but there seems to be no proof that such is the case. Richard Hammond
was in Marblehead as early as 1670 and may have been the father of Edward Hammond who married
there in 1709, but it is possible that this Edward was the son of Edward and Susanna (Bradley)
Hammond, who was born in Bristol, R. I., Dec. 1, 1687. (See R. I. families in following pages.) There is
some evidence of a connection between the families of Marblehead and those of Rehoboth and
Swanzey, Mass.
It is almost certain that the ancestor of the main family in Marblehead came from Ipswich, England. It
seems probable that both the Hammond and Peach families of Marblehead originally came from this
locality, and the Richard Hammond who was in Marblehead in 1670 was probably born in Ipswich,
England. His parentage was probably as follows:
(I) EDWARD HAMMOND and wife, Catherine, were living in the Parish of St. Clements, Ipswich,
England, in 1571 and 1577. They had several children, among whom were Mary, Susan and William.
(II) WILLIAM HAMMOND, son of Edward and Catherine, was twice married and left a large family
of children, among whom were the following, all mentioned in his will dated Jan. 24, 1649, proved May
23, 1650:
1. JOHN, b. (???); m. St. Clements, Ipswich, 1658, Elizabeth Crane. Had
several children, among whom were sons, John and William.
2. WILLIAM, a mariner whose will was probated, Arch. Suffolk, March 13,
1661. Wife Dorcas, sons John and William. Daughters Hannah,
Dorcas and Martha.
3. EDWARD, a mariner, m. St. Clements, Ipswich, 1638, Thomasine Peach,
dau. of William Peach, of Ipswich, Mariner, and Thomasine Cole,
his wife. His will was probated, Arch. Suffolk, Nov. 2, 1667, and
names children Jonathan, Nathaniel, Edward, Samuel, John,
William, Abigail and Thomasine. His sons, Edward and William,
were mariners and ship owners.
4. RICHARD, living in 1649, but no later records of him have been found in
England. He was probably the Richard of Marblehead.
5. MARY, living in 1649.
6. SARAH, the wife of John Barnes, of Ipswich.
7. (???), (a daughter) wife of (???) Grymble, in 1649.
"The Hammonds of Ipswich were a race of hardy sea captains and themselves in great part owners of
the ships they sailed in and of the cargoes they carried. They held the Manor of Newton Hall, in
Swilland, for several generations. Edward Hammond, who died a little after the Restoration, is
mentioned with approval by Matthias Candler, the Genealogical Vicar of Coddenham. 'Henry
Bloomfield,' he says, 'one of the Chiefe Constables of the Hu of Thredling, married to his second wife,
Thomasine daughter of Thomas Coale of Ipswich, the relict of Wm. Peche a Mr of a ship neere the old
Barre gates in Ipswich. She had a daughter married to Edward Hamont, Mr of a ship in Ipswich, a pius
man.'" -- Harl. M. S. 6071. p. 543.
"A tombstone in the church yard at St. Clements, Ipswich, has the following inscription: 'The Burying
place of Captain Benjamin Hamond and Captain John Hamond, sons of Edward Hamond, in this parish,'
and bears the coat of arms. The Shield, Party per pale, displays a quartrefoil between three demi--lions
passant guardant; and the Crest above, on helmet and torse, is a wolf's head erased." (Suffolk Manorial
Families.)
The Hammonds of Marblehead were nearly all mariners. Many of them were captains and ship owners.
It is probable that Elias Hammond, who settled in Marblehead about 1725, was from Lynn or Salem and
was a descendant of Elias Hammond, an early settler of Boston or Charleston. We shall first follow the
descendants so far as known of Edward Hammond, who married there in 1709.
(I) EDWARD HAMMOND, b. unknown, perhaps in Bristol, R. I., Dec. 1, 1687; d. Marblehead, Mass.;
m. Jan. 1, 1709, Rebecca Wormstele, whose parentage is unknown. The records in Marblehead are
very incomplete and it has been impossible to get more facts. Perhaps he had more children than those
credited to him and he may have been the father of John and Philip whose decendants follow his in this
work, but there is no evidence to show this and tradition denies it.
Edward was certainly the ancestor of the most numerous branch of the family in Marblehead. His
descendants were generally mariners, captains and ship owners, or in the West India trade. They were
generally well-to-do or wealthy people and the majority of those now living are people of superior
education and considerable means.

Sudbury, dated Oct. 19, 1756, leaves his property to his daughter, Susanna Hammond, late wife of
Edward Hammond, deceased, and names her as executrix. If she re-marries the property is to go to his
grandchildren, William and Mary Hammond, to be equally divided between the two after the death of
their aunt, Hannah Oakes.

His mother, widow Susanna Hammond, brother William Hammond and sister Mary Hammond,
petitioned the court March 28, 1761, for the appointment of Cornelius Wood, administrator of his estate.
He was appointed and gave bond with Josiah Richardson and Ezra Taylor as sureties. Jan. 4, 1762,
Wood petitioned for commissioners in insolvency on the estate and John Hawes and Asher Cutler were
appointed. No inventory or other papers are on file. (Middlesex Probate, No. 7142.)

(III) WILLIAM HAMMOND, (Edward2) b. Sudbury, Mass., 1739; d. Natick, Mass., June 16, 1816; m.
Feb. 14, 1764, Kezia Hawes, b. June 25, 1746, d. June 1, 1826, of Needham, Mass. He removed to
Natick about 1761. (H. Mann.) He was a Corp. in Capt. Joseph Morse's Co., Col. Samuel Bullard's
Regt., on the Lexington Alarm, April 19, 1775, and served five days. He served as a private in Capt.
Joshua Fiske's Co., Col. Abner Perry's Regt., from July 28, 1780, to Aug. 7, 1780. He probably saw
much service between these two
enlistments as there appears to have been considerable service credited to William Hammond, but
nothing to indicate his residence. His gravestone, surmounted by a willow and urn, bears the following
inscription:
"Weep not, my friends, dry up your tears,
I must lie here until Christ appears,
And at his coming, hope to have,
A glorious rising from the grave."
There is a S. A. R. marker on his grave. The gravestone of his widow bears the following inscription:
"Mrs. Kezia, wife of William Hammond, died June 1, 1826, , 80."
"O peaceful grave receive this clay
And keep it till the glorious day,
When our Grand Master bids arise
And join the lodge above the skies."
