From a sketch of the career of Capt. Hugh Mason, read before the Watertown Historical Society, Sept. 17, 1890, by a descendant, Charles F. Mason, a resident of this town, it appears that Hugh Mason was born in England in 1606. At the age of 28 he sailed for Massachusetts with his wife Esther, who was twenty-two years old. His original homestall of three acres, increased to more than one hundred and fifty acres by subsequent grants and purchases, was located on what are now the Hittinger and Livermore properties, School street, Belmont. Beginning with 1638, he served for twenty-nine years as selectman, the longest period on record in that office. While not a church officer, he was assigned important duties, including that of seating the church people, the rules of precedence being office, age, state and gifts, a method which was far from satisfactory.

He also performed duties similar to those later assigned to a justice of the peace, married couples in 1658 and for twenty years thereafter, and witnessed with a father's joy the marriage of his two daughters, May 20, 1668, the first recorded double wedding in this town.

Serving as deputy to the General Court for ten years, he was a member of important committees. In May, 1644, he represented Watertown at a Court of Election as "Leift Mason" and was chosen Captain of the Watertown train band in May, 1652, holding that position until his death in 1678, the training field being at the junction of Mt. Auburn and Arlington streets. Alfred S. Hudson, author of

the History of Sudbury, in an extended and graphic story of the Sudbury fight, speaks of the "noble work" done by Capt. Mason and his company who "through God's fafor" were sent from Watertown, Apr. 21, 1676.

Yet it is not clearly shown by the records that Capt. Mason led his command of Watertown men, either to Sudbury or Groton. He was at that time more than seventy years old, although still active as selectman and deputy to the General Court. He was one of a committee of three to provide a plan of defence for Middlesex County. The Court received a long report upon this matter, as well as his reports, upon which it acted favorably in relation to claims for assistance from those who had suffered

at the hands of the Indians.

"On the last day of August in 1678, the selectmen, of whom he was one, recorded the grateful acceptance of the gift from an inhabitant of Watertown--a black cloth to be used by the town for burial purposes. In just six weeks an opportunity came for its use -- at the burial of Hugh Mason."

It is estimated that about a dozen settlements were destroyed in the fourteen months of King Philip's War, involving a loss of 600 houses, and a military expense of œ100,000 sterling was incurred. Some 600 colonists, men, women and children, lost their lives by battle or massacre.

Watertown, while doing its proportionate part, was not seriously affected by subsequent wars up to the time of the Revolution,

The above information was expunged from a variety of sources including The Descendants of Capt. Hugh Mason in America, by Edna Warren Mason Pfizenmayer(1937), and the Genealogies of the Families and Descendants of the Early Settlers of Watertown, Massachusetts, by Henry Bond, M.D.(1860)

He was born 1640 in Enfield, Middlesex Co., England, and died September 16, 1711 in Concord, Middlesex Co., Massachusetts.

Notes for Mary Mason:

Mary married in a double wedding with sister Sarah who married Andrew Gardner.

Notes for Rev. Joseph Estabrooks I:

Joseph was the son of Joseph A. Estabrooks. He was married to Mary Mason daughter of Captain Hugh Mason and Esther Mason of Watertown.

Concord Massachusetts, the first home of the Flemish Estabrooks family, was founded in 1635 by a group of colonists under the Reverend Peter Buckeley, who came from England expressly for that purpose. They purchased six square miles of land from the Indians, with the present Monument Square at its center.

On the eastern side of Monument Square there is a hill. On the hill, the colonists built their first church, and located their burying ground. Against the side of the hill, they built their rude shelters for the first winter.

Joseph Estabrooks arrived in Boston from England in 1660. His brother Thomas may have come with him, or perhaps he came later. Their father in England may have arranged that Joseph's share of his estate should go towards his education, while Thomas should have the means to buy and equip a farm.

Joseph received a prepatory education for college in England, and entered Harvard soon after his arrival to America, graduating in 1664. he was made a freeman at Cambridge, Massachusetts, May 03, 1665. In 1667, he was ordained as colleague of Reverend Peter Buckeley, minister of the church in Concord, and on Reverend Buckeley's death, in 1696, became pastor of the church, continuing in that office until his death at age 71.

His salary at Concord was 80 pounds, of which half was to be paid in money and the remainder in grain. On 12 March 1681, the town voted "that every householder that hath a team shall carry yearly one load of wood to the minister; and every other householder or votable person shall cut wood one day for the minister; and that wood be equally divided to the ministers as the selectman shall appoint"

On his death, the Boston Letter of 18 September 1711, reported: "This day was interred in Concord the Reverend Joseph Estabrooks, minister of the gospel in said town for about 44 years (and many of them was colleague of the famous Mr. Buckeley).

He was eminent for his skill in the Hebrew language, and a most orthodox, learned and worthy devine; of excellent principles in religion, indefatigably laborious in the ministry, and of holy life and conversation.

The church in Concord in which Reverend Joseph preached was on the hill near the center of the old burying ground. It was the one first erected by the colonists. After his death, the congregation decided to build a larger, more convenient edifice; so down near the square, in 1712, they built the beautiful colonial building which was to witness some of the most stirring events of the Revolutionary War.

Notes for Captain Joseph Estabrooks II:

Also Known as Deacon Estabrooks.

Joseph (2) bought a farm in Lexington in 1693. It was near the Green on the Lexington-Concord Road. He was a prominent citizen. He commanded a military company, and was town clerk. treasurer, assessor, selectman, and representative to the General Court. He was also engaged to teach the first man's school in the town.

his son Joseph (3), had a slave, Prince Estabrooks, whom his son Benjamin (4) inherited. Prince, and Benjamin's son Joseph (5) were present at the fight on Lexington Common, 19 April 1775. Prince, who is said to have had outstanding courage and ability was wounded. Joseph (5) had a narrow escape, and aided in carrying the wounded to his father's house nearby. His father Benjamin (4), had taken Joseph's wife and small children to a safer place about a mile away.

Florence Estabrooks, who wrote this history does not make it clear in her book which of Joseph's children were by which marriage. However, Joseph and Millicent were married in December 1689, and she died in March 1692, about 17 months following the birth of their son Joseph, so she could not have been mother of more than two children, and perhaps only Joseph.

Notes for Elijah Estabrooks Sr.:

Elijah Married Hannah Daniels October 01, 1724 in Boston, Massachusetts. Thomas Prince, a Presbyterian Minister, performed the ceremony.

The place of residence for this family between 1724 and 1734 is unclear. There is a tradition on the Saint John River in New Brunswick that their son Elijah, was born in England about 1727, and that the father brought his family back to North America in 1730, and lived in Rhode Island.

Mrs. Elizabeth (Watson) Estabrooks, wife of Abraham, great grandson of Elijah and Hannah (Daniel) Estabrooks, "Aunt Betsy Abe' to the family, established a fruit business in Saint John, New Brunswick, and lived nearly one-hundred years, remaining alert and keen to the end. Her early married life was spent on a farm at Swan Creek, Queens Co. , New Brunswick, near upper Gagetown, property of John, her father-in-law, who was son of Elijah and Mary (Hackett) Estabrooks. Aunt Betsy Abe was full of Estabrooks tradition, and declared that she knew more about the Estabrooks than they new about themselves. She said Elijah, son of Elijah and Hannah (Daniel) Estabrooks, was born in England.

Elijah and his family possibly lived in Rhode Island from about 1730-1734, when they removed to Sherborn, Massachusetts, where his wife's family lived, and where his sister Hannah lived also. He died, intestate, in 1740, and his assets were meager. His relatives in Sherborn, and in particular his sister Hannah and her husband, Joseph Frost, looked after his family.

His widow Hannah, remarried February 09, 1743/44, to Joseph Burrell, of Newbury, Massachusetts. He owned a house and a shipbuilding business, in East Haverhill (Rocks Village), where they lived. Her children Samuel, Elijah, Submit, and possibly Hannah Estabrooks, lived there with them.

129. Capt. Elijah Estabrooks5 Jr. (Elijah Estabrooks4 Sr., Joseph3 Estabrooks II, Mary2 Mason, Hugh1) was born Abt. 1728 in England?, and died 1796 in Jemseg, New Brunswick, Canada. He married (1) Mary Hackett November 14, 1750 in Haverhill, Massachusetts. She was born August 01, 1728, and died 1778 in Gagetown, New Brunswick, Canada. He married (2) Sarah Hammond Oakes December 17, 1778 in Unknown, daughter of Philip Hammond and Mary Sweetland. She was born October 21, 1739 in Marblehead, Massachusetts, and died Abt. 1800 in Jemseg, New Brunswick, Canada.

Notes for Capt. Elijah Estabrooks Jr.:

Elijah was in Captain Israel Herrick's Company, Colonel Jedediah Prebble's Regiment, during 1758, stationed on Lake Champlain, and fought at Ticonderoga, New York. He was discharged November 07, 1758. He re-enlisted, April 06, 1759, and was sent to Halifax, Nova Scotia, where he remained until November 25, 1760. During this time, he became Sergeant. His Family remained in Boxford, Massachusetts.

He got home from Halifax December 15, 1760, and during the nest two and a Half years made preparations to remove his family to the St. John River. Governor Lawrence, of Nova Scotia, was urged by the Lords of Trade and Plantations in England to settle the lands on the St. John River which were vacated by the Arcadians with people from New England. This resulted in a settlement at Maugerville, Sunbury Co., New Brunswick, in 1763, by about 80 families, most of them from New England.

Elijah, however, took his family first to Halifax, then to Cornwallis, Nova Scotia, where he intended to leave them until he had made preparations for them on the river, which was a wilderness. He apparently went up the St. John River in the spring of 1763, and finding the lot he had drawn in Maugerville flooded, he returned to Cornwallis. During the next two years, he explored other areas, but remained in Cornwallis. On October 18, 1765 he entered the employ of Simonds, Hazen, and White, who operated a trading post, a fishery, a fur trade, and other businesses, at Portland Point ( St. John, New Brunswick)

Eight years later, in 1773, he made and Agreement with William Hazen and James Simonds to settle in the Township of Conway, at the mouth of the river, where the city of St. John is now located, Hazen and Simonds guaranteeing him 250 acres of land. An old population return dated August 1, 1775, shows that he had cleared and improved seven acres, and built a log house. His lot was No. 5, next the ship building plant. The lot next to him, no. 6, was owned by his son-in-law, Zebedee Ring.

The first act of aggression in St. John after the outbreak of the Revolutionary War occurred in August 1775, when a party from Machias, Maine entered the harbor in a sloop. They burned Fort Frederick, and captured a brig in the harbor which was loaded with provisions for the British troops in Boston. The raids were repeated several times later. The inhabitants were terrorized, houses were looted and some burned. In may 1777, John Allen, one of the most determined American sympathizers, set out from Machias with 43 men for St John in four boats. They spent several days on the river and took Simonds, Hazen and White prisoner, later releasing them.

After that experience, Simonds moved up the river to Sunbury Co., where he built a log house and lived for nine years. Elijah Estabrooks removed from St. John also, to Gagetown, in Queens Co. on June 30, 1783, a survey party went up the river from St. John by Major Guilford Studholm, to record who was in possession of lands, recorded for Gagetown: "Elijah Estabrooks has a wife and eight children, a log house with two rooms and about twelve acres of land cleared. He came from Cornwallis about 16 years ago; settled at the mouth of the river and says he was drove up by the rebels.

From the Book "Issac Simpsons World"

Community cooperation availed much, but it was the one-on-one neighborliness

of people that was esteemed above thrift or righteousness. Good living

conditions in the frontier community were in direct proportion to the

cooperative sociability of its inhabitants. The photographs of Issac

Simpson encapsulate one such community, the Estabrook Settlement,

demonstrating, the combination of frontier independence and cooperation.

The Estabrook family is typical of those in Issac Simpson's neighborhood.

Backed by a long tradition of religious leadership, this large family of

hardworking, community-oriented people brought with them the expertise and

courage for survival in yet another frontier situation.

Hammond Estabrook's first American forbear, Joseph, arrived in Massachusetts

Colony about 1660, graduated from Harvard, and was minister in Concord.

One of Joseph's grandsons, Elijah, was a Minuteman and participated

in the Ticonderoga campaign in 1727 and the Halifax campaign in 1759.

Elijahs son Hammond married Rebecca Glasier, daughter of Benjamin Glasier

of the family of New Brunswick lumbering entrepreneurs. After her death

in the late 1830's, her husband moved with at least eleven of thriteen

children to new lands and forests of opportunity in Amity. He and his

youngest son Jedidiah, were actively involved in town affairs.
