THE EX-PIRATE DJ PAGE
Hi there all of you radio djs of the past lovers, this page is dedicated to all those djs who went from 'illegal' to 'legal' stations. There are absolutely loads of them. unfortunately i haven't got every ex pirate dj but i have quite a few. This page will have as many of the said djs as i can find, it brings great memories of my ill spent youth listening to these old recordings. It also reminds me that i am nearly 49 years old, but still an 19 year old inside my head. I hope you enjoy these wonderful snippets of radio broadcasts by those great 'celebrity' djs of the past.
Here is a recording of Dave Lee Travis on BBC Radio 1 in 1970, this is classic DLT with a great trailer of a RAVE FROM THE GRAVE great stuff.
Two for the price of one here, hear DLT handing over the mic to Johnny Walker who broke the heart of all Caroline fans when joining BBC Radio 1, but we all have to pay the bills don't we Johnny.
Emperor Rosko on the Radio 1 Club (later the Radio One Roadshow) in Exeter in 1970. I can remember Rosko doing his first show on Radio One on a Saturday Lunchtime at 12.30 Newstime the announcer said "Now the news in ENGLISH" such was the rivalry between the old and new djs at Radio 1.
More Rosko highlights this is what i mean regarding the comment of the news reader on the above box. Rosko was very original but far too racey for the the likes of Radio 1, who was just the LIGHT PROGRAMME in disguise.
Here is John Peel 31 years ago, still sounding like he does today. Here is another EXCLUSIVE we here the legendary JIMI HENDRIX doing an impromtu jingle for BBC RADIO ONE. This is classic Hendrix and John Peel plugged him quite a lot.
Here is a recording of late actor/ dj Mike Raven who had a remarkable likeness to the horror actor Christopher Lee. Mr Raven even starred in a couple of crappy Horror Movies made on a shoestring here in the UK. This recording was aired in about 1969, when Radio One was still not WONDERFUL.
Dave Cash was on BIG L (Radio London) along with Mr Raven above. The deep voiced american was on Radio One for a year or two. He even produced his own pop show on ITV which was like stories with pop songs indispersed, I wonder what happened to them all. There must be someone out there who remembers them??????? please send me an e-mail if you know.
Here are two snippets pf programmes from Ed Stewart STEWPOT to the British public, he is still on BBC Radio Two who have the biggest radio audience in the UK. The first one we hear him on Wonderful Radio London along with his co presenter at the time Mr Paul Kaye. The second recording is from BBC Radio 1 in 1972 while doing his Junior Choice programme. It was aimed at young teenagers and children, it sounds laughable now (to be honest it was quite funny at the time) anyway compare the two examples.
This is a recording of the late Stuart Henry on Radio One, previously he had been on Radio Scotland the scottish pirate. Radio Scotland sounded the the Peoples Friend on radio, pretty naff i think, but it had some great djs including Mr Henry and a very young Alan Black also Tony Allan (RNI and Radio Caroline). Not long after this recording the BBC bosses sacked Stuart Henry because his speech was sometimes slurred, they though he was on the old grass. Not so later on he was diagnosed with MS, for the remainder of his career he was on Radio Luxembourg.
