* Objectives: After completing this unit of study, you should be able to: 1. Name the major causes of air pollution. 2. Distinguish between primary and secondary pollutants. 3. Explain how we could reduce air pollution. 4. Explain how thermal inversion can make air pollution worse. 5. Describe some possible health effects of air pollution. 6. Explain what causes indoor air pollution and how it can be prevented. 7. Explain what causes acid precipitation. 8. Explain how acid precipitation affects ecosystems. 9. Describe ways that countries are working together to solve the problem of acid precipitation.

The first half credit must be complete to earn any credit in this packet. The first class sessions of a grading period will be to help you with the questions, concept map, vocabulary, and with test-taking strategies. Labs will be scheduled for the balance of the sessions. To come to labs you must have completed the first half credit.

FIRST HALF CREDIT--Acquiring Information

1. _____ PreEcolog--Write out and answer the Ecolog questions at the beginning of the chapter. You may post these at your science web site or in a journal booklet. COMPLETE THIS BEFORE YOU DO ANYTHING ELSE IN THE CHAPTER.
2. _____ Information--complete one of the following:

2a. ____ Class Presentation--Attend the presentation in class on AIR. Take notes and complete the assignments given in class. Hand in work.
THIS PRESENTATION IS GIVEN THE FIRST WEEK OF THE CREDIT PERIOD.
OR
2b.
_____ Book--Read pages 150 to 165 in Holt Environmental Science. Write out questions and your answers to Chapter Review pages 166 and 167 (questions 1-21).
Transparency worksheets
_____ 6-3 #18 Primary Air Pollutants _____ 6-13 #21 Indoor Air
_____ 6-9 #19 Thermal Inversion Pollutants and Sources
_____ 6- 10#20 Formation of Smog _____ 6-16 #22 Formation of
_____
6-24 #23 Acid Precipitation Worldwide Acid Precipitation
3. _____ Concept Maps--reproduce map on page 165 or complete the map started during the class presentation.
4. _____ Vocabulary--Write and define:
1. acid precipitation 2. acid shock 3. air pollution
4. primary pollutant 5. secondary pollutant 6. sick-building syndrome
7. smog 8. thermal inversion
5. _____ PostEcolog--Now that you've studied these chapters, revise your answers to the questions you answered at the beginning of the chapter (PreEcolog), based on what you have learned. Write these revisions at your web site or in your Ecolog Journal.
6.
_____ Test--Chapter 6 __________ __________ __________
You may use your vocabulary list as you take the test.

If you don't pass test "A", write out the questions and answers to the Section Reviews . Check your answers with the key (located in the Resource Room). If your answer is incorrect, write the correct answer on your paper. You may use your Section Review answers as you take test "B"; attach the Section Reviews to your test when you're finished.

If you don't pass test "B", outline the chapter (include the section headings and sub points with summaries under each) and take test "C". You may use your outline as you take the test; attach your outline to your test when you're finished.

SECOND HALF CREDIT--Experimentation
Write up each using Ed Center science experiment write-up guidelines.

1.
_____ 6.1 Examining Car Exhaust
2.
_____ 6.2 Polluting Particulates
3. ____ Field Activity (p. 158 in text)

* THIRD HALF CREDIT--Current Science

1. ____ "Point of View"--text pp. 170 and 171.
Read the text; answer the "Analyze the Issue" questions on page 171. Use the Internet--go to Southern California Edison's website and choose one automaker website. Research information at both sites on electric cars. If you don't have Internet access, you may write for information. Write a 1/2 to 1 page summary; include bibliography information.

2a. ____ "Current Events"--
see "Current Events in Science Write-Up Sheet"

OR

2b.
_____ "Science World"--See instructions with issue.

FOURTH HALF CREDIT--Demonstrating What You've Learned

Communicating what you've learned with others--discuss and write up one of the following with your teacher. Check in with them regularly as you complete your work.

1. _____ Communicating Results--follow guidelines; write this up at your web site. Print and send a copy to your teacher.
or
2. _______ Poster and Brochure
--make a poster and an 8.5" by 11" folded brochure that illustrates the concepts you've learned this grading period.
or
3. _______ Project--
develop a project that will demonstrate concepts learned this grading period.
or
4. _______ Report--
Write a report about water; follow "Ed Center Guidelines for Typed Papers".
or
5. _______ Presentation
--5 to 10 minutes; live or video-taped--illustrating concepts you've learned about air.

*** Printed materials not found at this site may be obtained in the Resource Room.

Current Events in Science Write-Up Sheet
