| THE CASTLE OF TOURBILLON | ||||||||||
| The Castle of Tourbillon on the opposite hill dates from 1294, aside from the external walls, little is left. These days, its open for scramblings and yields excellent views along the valley and over the town. On an hill in Sion we can find two castles : the castle of Valre and the castle of Tourbillon. Tourbillon was born as an episcopal castle. His construction has been done to the bishop Boniface de Challant (1290-1308). During the XIVth century, Tourbillon had undergone on several occasions larges damages following the fights between the bishops and their politicals opponents. In the middle of the XV century, the bishop Guillaume III of Rarogne decided to restore it. It is on this date that the church was rebuilt. In this sanctuary there are remarkables frescos of the XVth century. The enclosure of the castle is surrounded of a large wall. Along the edge of the tray, this one is of irregular form. Its Eastern angle is marked by a defence work and in the south rise the church. In 1788, an important fire reduced the castle into ashes. Now we can him visite. There are ruins as a church. For have access to the door, we take a winding path. |
