Callie was a stray cat, found in my father's garage when I was a kid.  Before I even met her, I knew I liked her!  My dad and step-mom told me about this stray callico kitten in their garage just before I went up to visit them.  When I arrived, I got out of the car already calling, "Here, Kitty, Kitty!  Come here, Callie!"  She came out to greet me and started following me around and even shared my sandwhich with me.  (I didn't like pastrami but Callie sure did!)  My dad wouldn't let my step-mom keep Callie because she jumped up on the counter her first time in the house.  I decided I had to have her come live with me!
That Thanksgiving I brought Callie home to meet my mom.  The moment she stepped out of the cage she made herself at home!  She looked like she belonged there!  She even matched the carpeting in our apartment!
After a few nights of her creating havoc, however, my mom decided that we could not keep Callie.  I had to bring her back to my father's house.  Well, it took a lot but I finally got my mother to allow me to bring Callie back home...for good this time!
Callie was very spoiled.  That was, at least in part, because she was so special.  Callie was very unique.  She loved to go into the woods across from our apartment and find snakes to bring home and play with.  She would sit on them and when the would slither out from under her, she would, surprised, go looking for them.  When she wanted in, she would hang from the screen in our kitchen window to let us know.
Inside the house, she would play fetch with us carryng the ball back after we threw it.  Callie loved to climb and get into all kinds of trouble.
In early December 2003 I noticed Callie had started having some problems and we immediately took her to the vet.  At first they thought she just had some teeth that were rotten and did some surgery to try to remove the teeth.  The teeth just fell out of her mouth leading the vet to take some x-rays.  They saw something that could possibly be a tumor, but they were not sure.
In early January, Callie went back to the vet and they determined that she does, in fact, have cancer and the tumor is right behind her eye - and growing bigger.  We knew we wouldn't have much time with her.
On January 13th, we took Callie to the vet to have her put to sleep.  Even though we knew that was what was best for her, it was very difficult for us.
Because of the cold New England weather, we couldn't bury Callie just yet.  The vet was kind enough to store her until we could bury her in April at my dad's house.  Callie is buried under my lilac bush (my favorite flower).
