| Regan's Cichlid, Emerald Cichlid | ||||||||||||||||
| Size: I've heard that this species can reach 14", but I believe 10-11" is more typical. | ||||||||||||||||
| Origin: South Mexico: upper-course of Rio Coatzacalcos area | ||||||||||||||||
| Temperament: My Regani are still juveniles, but from what I have read and witness, this species appears to be rather laid back for such a large cichlid. | ||||||||||||||||
| Minimum Tank Size: I've heard that this fish can reach 14", but from my observations I think a size of 9-10" is much more likely. | ||||||||||||||||
| Availability: Regani is not a common fish at all. You will not be running into this one at your LFS most likely. But they can be found on the internet without to much trouble. | ||||||||||||||||
| May be confused with: None | ||||||||||||||||
| I'm currently raising 4 young Regani. I've had these juveniles for nearly 10 months and they are now approaching 3". I'd have to say that in my experiance this species is growing very slowly. They are rather peaceful and do not pick on each other or on any other fish. They have a very strong liking for snails and can always be seen searching for and eating the snails that had at one time over-populated my aquarium. In addition to this they also actively grazed my bed of Java fern to the point of ruin. Because of these observations I would strongly suggest that anyone keeping this species to include some frsh greens and fresh mussels in their diet. This past year Rick Perez entered a large Regani into the ACA cichlid show in Cincinnatti. This fish was approx 11" total length and extremely beautiful. It was a magnificent green color with much red in it fins and speckeled throught its entire body. |
