Paratheraps bifasciatus
Purple Head Cichlid
Size: The Bifasciatus is a very large cichlid that can potentially reach 14" or more.
Origin: South Mexico; Grijalva, Usumacinta, Rio Madrigal
Temperament: This species is rather aggressive and can be very rough with conspecifics.
Minimum Tank Size: Given their potenial size, I would recommend a 75-90g for a single Bifasciatus.
Similar Species: The Bifasciatus is very similar in appearance and behaviour to Paratheraps fenestratus, Paratheraps zonatus, and Paratheraps synspilum.
Availability: This species is not often seen in Pet Stores, although with a little effort a good source can be found on the interenet.
The Bifasciatus with its impressive array of colors, large and stocky body, and moderately aggressive temperament, is a perfect center piece fish for a large show tank. The Bifasciatus is by no means a common fish. When it is found in a fish store it is almost always of questionable purity and in most situations simply nothing like a true Bifasciatus. I have currently have 3 Bifasciatus in my collection.
