How LottoWheeler Came To Be
How LottoWheeler Came To Be
I believe it was 1993 when I was first introduced to the idea that one could "beat the odds" playing the lottery.  It came to me in the form of a story from a man I knew who told me of how he had analyzed the results of a certain lotto game for years, and, with the help of a computer, he had managed to devise a system that worked.  It worked so well, in fact, that one time, it had produced 20 tickers, and of those, one had been the jackpot winning numbers.  The only problem was, he hadn't played...

I suppose it was his secrecy about the whole thing that got me so interested.  It was secret, and I was curious.  The idea of such easy money never hurt, either.  (This was before I had come to realize that easy money isn't usually so easy.)  With a bit of time, listening carefully to what he was willing to tell me, I came to know at least a good part of his strategies, and I began to test them for myself.  And almost immediately, it was clear that while his strategies may have had some benefit in playing the lotto he had started out playing, they had little to do with the Florida Lotto.  So I set out to discover what it would take to "fix" this little system of his.

For a long time I was certain that if I could just find the right trick, I'd hit the jackpot.  As my efforts became more and more complicated, I began turning the chore of making them work over to my computer in the form of a lottery program.  It was eventually apparent that maybe it wasn't going to "just happen".  The time had come for a bit of research into mathematics.

Just to get things straight, I am not a mathematics genius by any stretch of the imagination.  In time, though, I was able to figure out how to calculate the odds for various things, and with the help of the Lottery America web site, I advanced my knowledge and understanding of the subject considerably.  In addition, I began looking seriously at what there was out there in the way of lottery software, and how various examples compared to my own software.

The sheer number of lottery programs out there amazed me.  It was quickly obvious that 98% (or more) of the software for this subject was either worthless (random number generators), based on faulty concepts, ridiculously complicated to learn, bloated with graphics, animations and sound effects that did nothing but distract the user, vastly overpriced, or some combination of these.

Up to about that point, my lotto software had been DOS based.  Then, in 1997, I began reworking it for Windows.  It had become as advanced as it could possibly be under DOS, but there were plenty of changes and improvements that still needed to be made.  Switching to Windows as my programming platform was my only choice.

In the past few years, I have slowly worked to make LottoWheeler what it is today.  It was, until recently, just a hobby.  The challenge of creating the software, incorporating all the features into it that I wanted, making it the best possible software for the job, and just plain solving the various puzzles it presented in it's creation was a lot of fun to work on in my spare time.  As my work continued and LottoWheeler took form, though, I began to see that it was becoming in may ways the equal (and in some ways the better) of the best lottery programs available.  When it began astounding me with what it was capable of doing -- and what it was actually achieving -- I decided that it was time to offer it to the public.

Don't get me wrong.  LottoWheeler is nowhere near "finished".  Software of this magnitude is never really finished, because there is always something to improve or add on.  I have big plans for LottoWheeler in the future.  But after all that time in development, even though it's not yet the end-all be-all of lotto software, I think it's going to make someone's day when they see what it is and does.  And as I continue to work on it and incorporate not only my ideas, but suggestions that people like you offer, it will become the best software of it's kind anywhere.
