While Jeremy and I were in Portland, we stayed at the Inn at St. John. It is "[a] 100 year old Inn noted for its European charm and quiet gentility, centrally located in Portland." It is located across the street from the Greyhound bus station.
The highlight of my trip to Portland, Maine was our trip aboard the Casco Bay Line' Mailboat run. This 3 hour scenic cruise is reasonably priced at $11.75 during the Summer months.
"An integral part of our island communities, the Mailboat carries passengers, freight and mail to the islands of Casco Bay. As the longest operating service of its kind in America, this narrated tour is a wonderful way to see the sights of the bay while the Mailboat tends to the business of providing supplies to the islands."

"The story of Acadia and its remarkable carriage roads...."
I first saw a picture of "a pair of bicyclists glide past a vista overlooking Jordan Pond and the Bubbles Mountains on a carriage road in Acadia National Park on Mount Desert Island" in "Now's the time to find that summer rental," Bangor Daily News, February 21-22, 2004, p. S4.
"Today, the Carriage Roads are thoughtfully managed by the National Park Service to provide the intended slow-paced experience where park visitors can totally escape the automobile. And nowhere in America is there a better example of how each generation has assumed stewardship responsibility for a very special place. "
