Dale County AlGenWeb

Welcome to the Dale County, Alabama portion of the AlGenWeb Project, a part of the national, USGenWeb Project. These Projects are a nation-wide, non-profit and volunteer effort to add family history / genealogical information and records to the Internet. The Project has now grown into an international effort.

Dale County was created by an act of the Alabama Legislature on 22 Dec., 1824 from parts of Henry, Covington, Barbour and Pike Counties. It is located in southeastern Alabama, near the Florida and Georgia borders in what is known as the "Wiregrass" region. The main watercourse is the Choctawhatchee River and its two forks. Ozark is the county; originally it was located at Dale Court House, which became Daleville and in the 1840's, relocated to Newton.

Dale County is home of Fort Rucker, the US Army's helicoptor flight training center and the largest employer in the county. It is also home of the Alabama Aviation and Technical College. Ozark is the largest city: other towns include Midland City, Ariton, Daleville, Grimes, Level Plains, Napier Field, Newton and Pinckard. Major communities include Echo, Bertha, Clayhatchee and Skipperville. Parts of the cities of Dothan and Enterprise jut into Dale County.

EDITOR's NOTE: family research in Dale County is very difficult due to courthouse fires in 1869 and 1884 that destroyed all important county records, including marriage licenses, deeds and wills prior to 1884. Only a few deeds prior to 1884 were re-recorded after the last fire.
