Basement Office 4:43 P.M. Eastern Standard Time Dana Scully stared at the letter in her hand- this day would be the last day at the F.B.I., her last day with Mulder. She had made this choice two weeks ago, when she handed in her letter of resignation to Assistant Director Walter Skinner. She hadn't told either Mulder or Skinner why she was leaving, but the contents of the letter explained it all. ~I'm holding a letter that I wrote last night, ~Trying to remember what it says inside. ~The words are written, but will never be said. ~Your voice keeps calling in my head; ~I don't believe it's time.... Scully paused before entering her and Mulder's office for the last time. ~But I try to say good-bye, ~but I feel so lost inside. ~I don't know my name- ~and I can't erase what's weighing on my mind. She walked into the office, remembering her first time there, when she met Mulder. -"Agent Mulder? I'm Dana Scully, I've bbeen assigned to work with you." -"So who'd you get stuck with this detaail, 'Scully'?" -"Actually, I'm looking forward to workking with you..." ~It's say's I'll be leaving on a red-eye plane, ~but I know I'm coming back again. ~You've heard the story a thousand times. ~The song keeps playing in my mind. ~I'm asking myself why... Scully moved to place the letter on his desk, and her eyes caught caught a glimpse, the only thing that had survived the fire last summer: The picture of them. ~But I try to say good-bye, ~but I feel so lost inside. ~I don't know my name, ~and I can't erase what's weighing on my mind. It seemed that their friendship could suvrive anything, even fraternization with the enemy; but this was too much. ~I try to stay awake, ~trying to write the words. ~And I'm trying to write the word, ~Good-bye. Scully carefully placed the letter on his desk, trying not to remember the one night last June she thought she'd never forget. -"I need you on this, Scully!" -"You don't need me, Mulder, you never have! I've only held you back!" ~Try to say good-bye, ~but I feel so lost inside. ~I don't know my name, ~and I can't erase what's weighing on my mind. They had almost kissed that night, made a pact- a promise- that would never be. She had hope, until she some them kissing like newly acquainted lovers. That's why she had to leave. ~And I try to say good-bye, ~but I feel so lost inside... ~I try to say good-bye.... She left the office, carrying all of her personal belongings in a F.B.I. labeled box. Hopeful, someday to return when all of this had been forgotten. XXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXX Mulder entered the office, a new case file in hand. He had to tell Scully about the news he found on Diana Fowly. He knew this was Scully's last day, but he wanted to see her before she left. He wanted to change her mind. -"I don't want to do this without you. I don't even know if I can, and if I quit now, they win." He still felt the same way. He didn't know if he could live without her. No matter how much he tried, he couldn't rid himself with his fascination of her. There was no doubt Fox Mulder loved Dana Scully. Mulder went to place the file onto his desk when his eyes caught sight of the letter, addressed to him, sitting up against the clock. ~And I try- ~I try, ~to say good-bye. Mulder recognized Scully's handwriting and quickly snatched up the letter. He carefully opened, afraid he word tear apart the words that Scully had written. He started to red the letter: Dear Mulder, My plane is leaving early tomorrow morning, taking me to some place that I'd rather not write. But I have faith that I'll see you again. Although we have been through so much together, it is time to say good-bye, to part and go our different ways. You are everything to me, Mulder. I just can't stay around to see you love another woman. Especially a woman that I hate with every molecule that is within my body. I love you, Mulder, and I have no doubt that Agent Fowly will help you with your quest, your search for the truth. I have no doubt that she'll help you investigate the X-Files. She was the first anyway. Good-bye, Mulder. Sincerely, Yours Truly, Scully Mulder blinked away the tears that threatened to spill and ran out of the office, after Scully. XXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXX Scully stumbled down the stairs, and lost her balance, sending the contents of the F.B.I. labeled box flying down the flight of stairs. She landed on her side. "Damn." she hissed, standing up and cracking her neck, she sat back down on the steps and held her head in her hands. Today was definately NOT her day. ~And I try to say good-by. Mulder ran down the stairs; what a day for the elevator to be broken! He froze when he saw Scully sitting on one of the steps, hunched over, crying. ~And I try. Scully turned around when she heard footsteps behind her. She quickly stood up, brushed herself off, and started collecting her things back into the F.B.I. box. ~And I try. Mulder picked up a few of her things, noticing the picture of them that had survived the fire. He handed the things to her. "Please don't leave, Scully." he pleaded with her. Scully accepted her things and tossed them into the box carelessly. "You love her, Mulder. You don't need me anymore!" she informed him, picking her box back up and started down the stairs. ~And I try... "I'll always need you, Scully! I don't love her, I love you!" he told her, following her down the stairs. ~Try to say good-bye. Once she reached the bottom of the stairwell, Scully turned to face him once again. "I saw you, Mulder! I saw you and Agent Fowly..." her eyes looked uncertian, she didn't know how to explain what she saw. "Practicing... tonsil hockey!" all of those years attending school and she ended up using elementary phrase. ~And I try to say good-bye. "She kissed me, I didn't kiss her." Mulder explained. ~I try... Scully stood there shocked. "But- but... Mulder, you mean you didn't kiss her?" she asked, stuttering. Mulder chuckled, hearing Scully stutter wasn't an everyday occurrence. "Right." he answered. ~I try... "Do you think Skinner will accept my unresignation?" she asked him, smiling softly. "I don't think he really filed your resignation." Mulder said, holding his arms out to her. "Come here." ~I try. Scully smiled widely and accepted the warm, comfortable hug. Mulder smoothed her read hair back. "Oh and Scully?" he asked. She buried her head in his shoulder, causing her voice to be muffled. "Yeah?" "It was so disgusting! She smokes Morley's like CGB, it was like kissing him! I also found out that she's working for him." Scully pulled back, her face blank. "Mulder, I'm sorry." she told him. Mulder shrugged his shoulders, pulling her to him again. "Oh, well." he replied. She laughed against his chest.
