La Republique
Liberty took on the role of La Republique - of the State - when it was realised what extent the King or Monarchy had been the central focus of symbolism of the state. Furthermore the symbolism had to be greater than any one man of the moment so could not resemble any of the political players, despite the uproar this would inevitablycause, the symbol of the nation should be above politics.
Naturally never in contemporary dress as La Republique was supposed to give the impression of eternity and longevity, here she is very matriarchially presented, more reserved than her usual aggressive stance.
