Space Tourist inspires Race Tourists |

Taking a page from the Russian Aerospace Agency's "space tourist", several Indy
Racing teams are actively soliciting
"race tourists" as a way to buoy their cash-starved operations. "There have
always been parallels between the
aerospace industry and racing", offered one team owner who preferred to remain
anonymous, "so when our volunteer marketing guru read about the
RAA blasting that Tito guy to the International Space Station for money, it
just seemed to click.
It's kind of a natural progression for us, and we probably would have thought
of it eventually without the Russkies,
but it's nice that they sort of tested the water for us first."
Despite reports of some motion-sickness problems contributing to both electronics failures and dangerous track conditions, the teams seem quite pleased with the program's potential. "If we manage this thing right, it could grow into a nice, stable, multi-thousand dollar source of income. We're already exploring a cross-promotional opportunity with Disney Adventure Cruises which would net us nearly $2500 per Disney AdventureDriver," enthused another shy team owner via an intermediary. "That's U.S. dollars, and a great entertaiment value for the drivers AND spectators." |
