Eddie Cheever has clearly grown tired of the inevitable comparisons to
history's great drivers.
"I have clearly grown tired", offered Eddie in a recent interview, "of the
inevitable comparisons to history's great drivers. It was bad enough when it
was just the Michael Andretti thing. That was understandable enough in the
beginning, anyway, but by the time I got my first Indy win* it was clear that
that sort of thing had to stop. Just how many Indy wins does little Mikey have?
Enough with the whining, and enough with the 'forty CART wins' smokescreen. In
CART, all that matters is the equipment, and that hack always had the best
while I was stuck with that loser Ganassi. That's what makes Indy Racing so
beautiful. That kind of thing just doesn't happen here."
"As if that wasn't bad enough, the public started in with that whole Montoya
jag. How many Indy wins does Juan Pablo have? How many seasons has Juan Pablo
spent in F1? Thought so. Don't get me wrong, the kid could turn out to be some
sort of freaky unnatural superhuman talent, but don't forget that his Indy win
came
only with the help of the team that kicked CART's ass for four years running.
Buddy Lazier actually finished the race a lap and a half before Montoya, but
Juan Pablo made all of his pit stops during practice so he'd have them out of
the way. I'll say this, the best TEAM won that day."
"Mario? One Indy win, same as me. Senna? No Indy wins. I'm telling you, I just
wish people would stop comparing me to these guys, nitpicking every stat and
idiosyncracy. I'm not those guys, I'll never be those guys, I can't be those
guys. I can only be me, right here, doing what I'm doing right now.
That's it."
