In the aftermath of disappointing attendance figures from April's Infiniti
Grand Prix of Miami at Homestead Speedway, Indy Racing impresario Tony George
has announced his intention to request a formal recount.
"I have recently learned that another open-wheel racing series ran at this
track as recently as last season," spake a radiant George. "The implications
are clear. Confusion in the marketplace could easily cause the largely elderly
and foreign-born Floridians to mistakenly attend the previous year's Alternate
Series race rather than the Indy Racing League event. The Alternate Series'
persistent use of expensive equipment, preponderance of foreign drivers, and
lack of Midwestern dirt-track talent should clearly put them at an attendance
disadvantage. Something doesn't add up, because that's not what the numbers
show."
Homestead Speedway officials were not certain how they'd respond to the
request. "What does he want, a runoff?" opined one largely accentless track
representative. "Last week this Bob Reif guy actually suggested that we ask
each of our customers to buy ANOTHER ticket to last month's race just so we can
count them again. Don't they know what it means to live on a budget?"
