Entry for December 23, 2006
Two days to Christmas...I wish Happy Holidays to all! :-) I've decided to replace The recruit and Enter the Reverend with their updated versions before getting the feedback .... you could say I have no patience and you'd be right. ;-) At any rate, I'm more comfortable with the beginnings of Reverend Justice and his relationship to Hawkgirl. Funny how that relationship came into play in my stories too: when I was creating Reverend Justice, with no clue of what to write, on the Justice League Unlimited animated series, Green Lantern had broken up with Hawkgirl and was dating Vixen. Meanwhile Hawkgirl dated...nobody. There I got the idea of making my character her boyfriend. It was a risk too: throughout Seasons One through Three of JLU, hints that GL and Hawkgirl might reconcile and be the parents of Warhawk. Since I wanted my stories to have some vague sense of continuity with the animated JLU show, I created a plot twist by which GL and Hawkgirl are Warhawk's parents, but still went their separate ways; GL to Vixen and Hawkgirl ... to a life of confusion and self-doubt until she and Joey crossed paths. I was tempted to scrap the whole Warhawk plot twist in my stories as JLU actually ended for good :-( with Green Lantern saying he wouldn't be fate's puppet and that his place was at Vixen's side. I went over the stories featuring Reverend Justice, and...I didn't have the heart to do it: erase Warhawk from my storylines, I'd grown attached to the young lad! I've made Joey into his Godfather and Mari (Vixen) into his Godmother. By the by, all of my stories occur post the TV grand finale of JLU, it makes things simpler...sort of! For this particular plotline, it happens in that 4 year period between the time Hawkgirl rescues Joey from his car accident and the time Joey jumps in the line of fire to save Hawkgirl and becomes the Justice League's new recruit. During that four year span, Vixen could sense GL still had feelings for Hawkgirl, so she set him free, wanting no doubts between them. GL and Hawkgirl gave it a second chance, but it became plain to see that spark was gone. Lantern returns to Vixen. Hawkgirl realizes she's pregnant and goes to Dr Fate's once again. Due to the DNA mismatch, there was no guarantee the child would be healthy, and if the child was, he'd be a prime target for Thanagarian agents and Super Villains. For her newborn's son's own safety, Hawkgirl leaves young Rex in Dr Fate's care. Like the plotline yet? Green Lantern is first confused and torn - in spite of efforts not to be fate's puppet fate has been fulfilled. After a lot of soul-searching, he accepts being the father of young Rex, Vixen agreeing to be the young boy's Godmother. Hawkgirl is confused and feels she's a failure as a lover and as a mother- she alone can't assure her son's safety, be a mother and a Justice Leaguer all at once. And the memory, the disarming helpless look on Joey's face (she didn't know him yet) still haunter her. Dr Fate told her that events were in motion that would make her very happy, to return to the Justice League. Still confused, she returns to the Justice League...and her own life is saved by the same man whose helpless look still haunted her. She remembered Dr Fate's words and knew at once this was no coincidence. Thus they shared a mutual attraction, and naturally fell in love. (I'm such a sap!) Joey worshipping the ground Shayera walks on, and Shayera acting overprotective and territorial of Joey. In a nutshell, that's it anyway ... there are a few extra subtleties here and there! ;-) Have a Merry Christmas everybody, and a wonderful 2007!
