Enter the Reverend

Meet Alfred

Joey woke up with a slight headache but did not care. Still in his bed was the woman he loved: Shayera Hol – Hawkgirl, sleeping on her side, facing him.

"Best damn birthday present ever!" He thought with a smile, silently admiring her. He gently touched her hair.

She stirred and opened her eyes. She smiled.

"Morning Joey!" she said, stretching.

"Good morning to you!" he said, kissing her. "I didn’t snore too much did I?"

"I never heard a thing!" She said, her smile widening. "Time to get up and about, you have a full day ahead of you…Reverend Justice!"

She was about to leave for her quarters to shower, but Joey held onto her arm.

"Shower with me!" He said, smiling excitedly, like a giddy teen.

"Joey, it’s kind of cramped in there!" She said, giving him an incredulous look, but smirking at his enthusiasm.

"Come on Shy, let’s try it! I’ll scrub your back!" He said.

The expression on his face was irresistibly charming. She agreed.

They showered. She was a bit surprised they could both fit in the shower: her with the wings and him with the muscular upper body. But they somehow did.

She had to admit it was a good idea: she rather enjoyed having him scrub her back, and she gladly reciprocated.

"Now why did John and I never do this?" She wondered, then dismissed the thought. "That was then, this is now." She smiled blissfully as he lathered up her back, shoulders and buttocks, then rinsed off the soapy suds, making an effort not to get her wings too wet.

She smiled and kissed him. They towelled off.

They left for the mess hall and had breakfast. He popped an Acetaminophen with a sip of coffee. She winced.

"Ugh, doesn’t that upset your stomach?" She said.

"No, not really…overdid it with the rum punch last night!" he said with a sheepish smile.

She returned his smile, reaching for his hand across the table. The mess hall was unusually empty – which suited them both fine.

"What next Shy?" he asked.

"Batman should be here any minute. He’s likely to take you to the Bat-Cave and have Alfred take your measurements. He also mentioned he wanted to discuss gear with you." She said, finishing off the last of her coffee.

"Okay, you’re the third person to mention him, who’s Alfred?" he asked, head tilted.

She smiled, "Alfred is an associate of Batman, also employed by Bruce Wayne." She said.

"And Batman told me he and Mr. Wayne had an arrangement" he nodded. "I’m beginning to see the link."

She smiled at him nodding. She felt bad for not letting him in on many secrets, but he was not an active member on the roster, yet. Joey was already privy to her own secret identity, found out Robin’s when he became his sparring partner and Green Lantern’s after their ‘drinking buddies bonding’.

He’d probably figure out Superman’s and Flash’s soon enough, as their wives were present at the reception the night before, and while he didn’t yet know Nightwing and Starfire’s full names, he did know their first names were Dick and Kory.

"Batman will tell you himself Joey!" She thought, still smiling.

"Will you be coming with me?" he asked, looking at her dreamily.

"I’d love to go, but I’m on active duty today. I will see you tonight though, unless we have some emergency." She said, reaching for his other hand.

As they held hands, he nodded thoughtfully. He understood that in case of crisis, some members may be required to be away on mission for several days in a row: that was part of the deal.

"I know you can take care of yourself if there is an emergency," he said with a smirk "Just be sure to come back to me in one piece okay?" He gave her hands a gentle squeeze.

"I just love it when you’re concerned about me!" she said, letting go of his hands, puckering him up again by squeezing his face with her hand.

She leaned across the table and kissed him.

"Gentle on the squeeze!" He said, with feigned annoyance "You don’t know you own strength!"

She laughed. Neither one of them hear Batman walk in.

"Am I interrupting?" Batman said.

"Would it make a difference if I said yes?" Hawkgirl said with her lips pursed in an amused pout. "By the way where’s Wonder Woman?" her pout turned into a teasing smile, her right eyebrow raised.

Joey looked at her curiously. She winked at him.

"No to the first question, giving a training session to her eventual replacement at the Themiscyran Embassy to the second question." he replied, trying to keep a stern expression but unable to hide his amusement.

"Diana’s mellowing you out Mr. Wayne, it really looks good on you!" Shayera thought with a sense of marvel.

"He’s all yours for the day," Hawkgirl said, getting up. "Just bring him back to me in time for dinner!" She said, and waved at them as she left. Joey returned her wave, not caring to notice if Batman was doing the same.

"Slept well Luscious One?" Batman asked with a smirk.

"Other than a slight headache from the rum punch I’m fine…pretty damned fine!" He said, a beatific smile covering his face. "And ‘The Luscious One’ is a voice from the past, Batman, I'd really prefer to keep it there."

Batman’s smirk turned to a smile "Fair enough. Now if you’ll follow me we’ll get you outfitted. Any idea what your suit should look like?" He said.

"Many ideas but nothing specific, a cross between the Green Hornet, the French Ankou and that radio Character, ‘The Shadow’, perhaps a bit more modern." Joey said.

Batman nodded. He had dealt with the Green Hornet many years ago, when Dick Grayson was still Robin. They walked to the nearest transport.

"We’ll get you fixed up in no time." Batman said.

They materialized in the Bat-Cave. An elderly gentleman with a measuring tape slung across his shoulders – Alfred, Joey surmised - was there waiting for them. Various boxes of gadgets and samples were laid out on a table.

"Ah, Master Batman, and Mr. Lucas I presume?" Alfred said.

"That would be me!" Joey said, gracefully accepting he wouldn't likely be called 'Luca' any time soon.

"Alfred will take your measurements. But first, stand on that platform." Batman said.

The platform was surrounded by digital cameras, all linked to the Bat Computer. Joey stepped on.

"Now stand up straight." Batman said. The cameras flashed. A 3-D representation of Joey appeared on the large computer monitor.

"A little beta program courtesy of Wayne Enterprises." Batman said. "We can go through various types of body suits, boots, gloves, masks and accessories; and you can get an idea if that’s close to what you have in mind. Then we plug in Alfred’s measurements and he will get started on putting your suit together."

Joey stepped off the platform with an amazed smile. "So that’s where all of the Wayne Enterprises unmarketable prototypes go to,sweet arrangement there Batman!" he said.

"And that’s why you signed a non disclosure agreement." Batman said, typing a few commands at the Bat-Computer.

"Understood!" Joey said, making a lock and key motion in front of his lips.

Alfred began taking his measurements as Batman scrolled through the beta program's menu.

"We’ll begin with a Kevlar reinforced basic suit, add insulated combat boots with steel toe caps and reinforced shin guards, insulating gloves with reinforced wrist and forearm guards." Batman said.

"What’s Kevlar?" Joey asked.

Batman smiled. "It’s the secret weapon for those of us who aren’t bullet-proof. Kevlar is five times stronger than the same weight of steel, while being lightweight, flexible and comfortable. It is also very heat resistant and decomposes above 400 °C without melting. With the proper dampening lining, it makes for a very flexible and lightweight bullet-proof suit." He said.

"Stout and muscular, shorter than you but nearly the same in measurements Master Batman." Alfred said.

Batman nodded. "Can one of the standard basic suits be altered Alfred? It would save us a lot of time." He said.

"Oh absolutely Sir. His shoe size is smaller than yours though." Alfred said.

"Will these do? Wildcat had them made for me, a gift from one fighter to another." Joey said, smiling, pointing at his boots.

"May I have a look Mr Lucas?" Alfred asked.

"Er, you sure you want me to take them off? I’ve been kinda sweaty!" Joey said, looking embarrassed.

"Oh think nothing of it Sir!" Alfred said.

Joey took his boots off, blushing a little, and handed them to Alfred.

"Oh yes, very well made," Alfred said. "Already features steel toe caps and a thick insulating rubber sole."

"Makes my short 5’8" stature look closer to 6’ tall!" Joey said. "It also has orthopaedic insoles to cradle my flat feet."

Alfred grinned, "Indeed, all we need to do is add a shin guard to them and you’re set with the boots." He said.

"Be sure to have a backup pair of boots made Alfred. And a backup basic suit. Kevlar’s durable, but it wears out eventually." Batman added.

"Very well Sir, I will begin with reinforcing Mr. Lucas’ boots. His feet must be getting cold." Alfred said, taking Joey’s boots away. Alfred stepped through the door that led to the staircaise to Wayne Manor.

"Look, Batman, I appreciate everything you’re doing for me, but, double suits and boots and gadgets … I feel bad here!" Joey said.

"What for? You’re an employee of Mr. Wayne, he has an arrangement with the Justice League. All of this is supplied by Wayne Enterprises. Consider it as a part of an elaborate Benefits Plan. Besides, I’m grooming you for my special task force, remember? I couldn't exactly let you hit the streets with your wrestling gear!" Batman said.

"All the same, thanks a million!" Joey said, with a smile.

Batman smirked, "Think nothing of it. You’re one of us now. And when you beat the tar out of that sniper, you saved my life as well as Wonder Woman’s and Shayera’s. The Kevlar suit isn’t fool-proof. The chest piece is the strongest, but one stray bullet in the wrong spot could be fatal … or break a rib in the best case scenario. While I’ve been known to have a hard time saying ‘thank you’ I’m not ungrateful." He said, smirk turning to smile. Batman extended his hand. They shook hands.

"While Alfred reinforces your first set of boots, how does this look as an insignia?" Batman said.

Batman keyed in a few commands then dragged and dropped a crest on the chest of the 3-D representation of Reverend Justice on the big Monitor.

The insigna, a large silver Cross adorned the black Kevlar chest plate of the 3-D image. Joey nodded with a smile. "Yes, I like this!" He said.

"How about a cape?" Batman asked.

"Do you know many preachers with a cape?" Joey said, grinning.

Batman’s lips were pressed in a tight smile. He nodded and dragged and dropped a long, dark trench coat instead.

Joey’s expression lit up. "Yes, you got something there!" He said.

"We can have multiple pockets on the inside for gadgets, it would save you wearing a utility belt. Even have secret compartments in the sleeves." Batman said, pensively.

"Poor Alfred’s going to be real busy!" Joey said.

"He’ll have help, I’ll see to it." Batman said. "And now for masks …"

Batman walked to the table with the boxes of gadgets.

"It might be better if I actually showed you the genuine articles, give you a feel for them." Batman said.

They went through several masks from one of the gadget boxes but couldn’t find something that fit the suit. Batman came across a new prototype and smiled.

"How about something like this?" Batman said, "That mask will provide eye protection, night vision, infra-red heat scans and progressive protection against varying light conditions, from very bright to very dim. This prototype also features a micro-camcorder, to allow you to take short video clips as evidence as well as other nice features."

The prototype mask was comprised of a wide kevlar band which went around the head, hooked to an elaborate set of goggles at the front; which hid the eyes nicely as well as protecting them. It left the top of his head uncovered though.

"Sounds great, looks cool, how about a hat? Cover the hair!" Joey said.

Batman put the mask down and walked back to the Bat-Computer. He keyed in a few more commands. Joey’s 3-D representation was now wearing a copy of the mask, as well as a black hat. Joey smiled.

"I think the Reverend is born brother Batman!" Joey said, feeling excited.

Non disclosure

Batman smirked. He turned on the intercom.

"Alfred? We have a finalized version. I’m printing out the patterns for you." Batman said.

"I’m on my way Sir. Mister Lucas’ boots are ready. Shall I bring down some coffee and sandwiches?" Alfred replied.

"That would be great Alfred, thanks!" Batman said.

The transport buzzed. Batman and the soon-to-be Reverend Justice both were startled. Wonder Woman materialized.

"What a day, but I think Deanna will do well at the Embassy." She said, with a satisfied smile. "Bruce, I need to relax, do you mind if I use the Jacuzzi …" she stopped in mid-sentence.

She had completely forgotten Batman was having a consultation with Joey. And she called him Bruce in front of him.

"Oops." She said, putting one hand to her face, looking quite annoyed at herself.

Batman just stared gape mouthed.

After a few moments of awkward silence, Joey spoke up.

"I know; non-disclosure." He said.

He looked at Wonder Woman, "But now I know where I’ve seen you before: your hair was different and you wore glasses. You were accompanying Bruce Wayne at the Wayne Enterprises Christmas Party." He said.

He looked at Batman, "And she called you Bruce…ain’t that right boss?" He concluded.

Wonder Woman looked flustered: "Bruce, I’m so sorry, but we were going to tell him sooner or later, weren’t we?" She said.

Batman sighed. Then he smiled and chuckled with a shrug. His eyes moved from Wonder Woman to Joey.

"Yes, we would have told you sooner or later." He told Joey.

He pulled his cowl back and looked at Joey.

"Now you know why the benefits were so good! But be aware: you must be very careful from this point on. No tongue slips. When we’re in full garb, we refer to one another by our aliases." Batman, now Bruce Wayne, said.

"Absolutely," Joey said. "I guess I’ll just be called ‘Rev’ for short!"

Alfred walked in with a tray with the sandwiches and coffee, Joey’s boots under his right arm. He saw Batman with his cowl off, speaking with Wonder Woman and Mr. Lucas.

"Oh dear! Is it safe to assume Mister Lucas is now in your confidence sir?" Alfred said.

"Yes Alfred, we just let him know ahead of schedule is all!" Batman said, Wonder Woman blushing.

Using every bit of self-restraint not to burst out laughing and risk further embarrassing Wonder Woman, Joey walked towards Alfred.

"Here, let me help you Alfred!" Joey said, stepping up to Alfred, taking the tray from him and putting it down on the table near the gadget boxes.

"Thank you Mr. Lucas, your boots are ready!" Alfred said with a smile, handing him his boots.

He slipped them on and smiled.

"They feel great, thanks Alfred!" He said. Joey had feared his boots would be too stiff to wear, but they felt as comfortable as they did before, only with solid kevlar reinforced shin guards.

Alfred nodded at him with a smile, and picked up the patterns from Batman. He then asked Wonder Woman, "Miss Diana, shall I bring you some lunch too?"

"Please Alfred that would be wonderful, your coffee smells so good!" She said, smiling.

"Very well, madam!" Alfred said, and went back upstairs.

Batman and Wonder Woman kissed, leaving Joey feeling a bit uncomfortable.

"Of course you can use the Jacuzzi!" Batman said with a smile.

"Thanks Bruce, you’re the best!" She said.

Joey cleared his throat to get their attention. They chuckled.

"Tell me, you wouldn’t happen to have an invention that could help Shy hide her wings in one of those boxes, would you boss?" Joey asked, blushing. "Since Shayera and I became an item, I’ve been meaning to take her out on a proper date, but I’d like to do so quietly, without unwanted media attention."

"Well, Shy does have a backpack she uses for under cover missions, she keeps her wings folded in it … but that still wouldn’t make it comfortable for her to sit in a Restaurant or in a Movie Theatre." Wonder Woman said.

"I fear I don’t have an invention for this purpose…but I know who might!" Batman said, smiling, "And by the way, stop calling me ‘boss’! It’s either Batman or Bruce when we’re off duty!"

Joey asked, "Are we on duty?"

"Not officially, but we are in the Bat-Cave." Batman said.

"Okay Batman!" Joey said, with a silly shrug.

Wonder Woman giggled, Joey definitely had a sense of humour.

Alfred had showed up again with a second tray of Coffee and sandwiches.

"Your lunch is served, Miss Diana." He said.

Wonder Woman smiled, taking the tray from him. "Thank you Alfred!" She said, sitting down on one of the chairs near the Bat-Computer.

She took a sip of Coffee as Batman was dialing out on the Bat-Cave Comm. link.

"Ivytown University, how can I direct your call?" the computerized answering sysem said.

"Professor Ray Palmer please" Batman said.

"Please hold." The computerized answering system replied.

After a pause, Ray’s voice spoke, "Palmer here, how can I help you?" He said.

"Batman here Ray, are you busy?" Batman said.

"Kind of at the moment, but I’ll be free in about an hour, what’s up?" Ray said.

"When you have a chance, get a transport to the Bat-Cave, we need your expertise." Batman said.

"Will do, just give me a chance to wrap-up here and I’ll be on my way." Ray said.

"Thanks Ray, Bat-Cave out." Batman said, then turned to Joey. "If anybody can find a way to render Shayera’s wings invisible, he can!"

"I’m in your debt again Batman!" Joey said.

"Like I said, you’re one of us. Besides, Shayera hasn’t been this happy in the past few years, I’m only glad to help!" Batman said.

Wonder Woman had finished her lunch. "That was wonderful, thanks Alfred!"

Alfred bowed resfectfully.

"Now boys, if you don’t mind, I have a date with the Jacuzzi!" She said, and then kissed Batman on the cheek. She headed towards the exit that led to the staircase.

"Have fun Princess!" Batman said.

All three men watched her walk away, then Joey and Alfred looked embarrassed as Batman shot them a "What are you staring at?" sideways glance.

Alfred cleared his throat. "I guess I should put the finishing touches to Mr Lucas’ outfit." He said, as he made his way to the exit.

Batman couldn’t repress a giggle. Joey had the feeling this was a long standing running gag between the two men.

"And now, for the rest of your gear." Batman said, pointing to another box on the table. "The Justice League emergency communicator is standard issue, you wear it in your ear, it’s very compact and responds to voice commands."

They went through a list of gadgets and weapons. The mask/goggles were the first item they had selected. The next one was the communicator.

The hat would feature Kevlar reinforcements and a shock absorbing lining – useful if someone trises to sneak up on you and clobber you on the head.

Special attachments to the gloves would fire stun bolts – more compact than stun guns and more sophisticated as well: they could fire at a target up to 20 feet away.

The piece de résistance – a modified quarterstaff. It would be made of a light weight, unbreakable alloy. Press one button and it will be charged with a low intensity current – thus the insulated gloves and boots.

"More gadgets and weapons will come with time, just let me know if you think of any other ideas." Batman said.

"You’re already doing a lot for me, but, any chance of a sweet ride like Robin’s Redbird?" Joey asked looking sheepish.

"That’s in the works." Batman said, once more smiling cryptically.

Sevreal hours had already passed since they had gotten to the Bat-Cave. They must have gotten there around 9:30, it was now close to 3 pm. Alfred walked in carrying bags.

"Mr Lucas’ first prototype suit is ready sir!" he said.

"Ready for a fitting?" Batman asked.

Joey smirked and stripped down to his briefs. He slipped the suit on, marveling on how comfortable it felt, and on how well it fit.

"That’s wonderful work Alfred, I don’t think it needs any touching up!" Joey said, impressed.

"You’re far too kind Sir." Alfred replied. "Your backup suit should be ready in a few days." Alfred took his leave.

Batman picked up the mask from the table and handed it to Joey, who put it on.

"How does the mask feel Reverend?" Batman asked.

"Comfy, and the vision… crystal clear!" he said, smiling.

Batman nodded, and handed him his hat next. Joey put it on.

The newly born Reverend Justice, adopting a lower-key voice and giving it a slight cajun accent to cover his French accent, said, "I feel like a new man Brother Batman!"

"The stunner attachments for your gloves and the Quarterstaff will be ready in a few days. You should be fully outfitted by the end of the month. Until your ride is ready, you’ll have to rely on one of the Javelins, and on point-to-point transports from the Watchtowers." Batman said. Reverend Justice smiled.

The Atom materialized near them, startling Reverend Justice. "Sorry for the delay Batman, what can I do for you?" He said.

"Atom, meet our newest recruit, Reverend Justice. We have a favor to ask." Batman said.

"Ask away!" Atom said, as he and Reverend Justice shook hands.

Batman looked at the Reverend: "Your perogative RJ!" He said.

Reverend Justice nodded with a smirk, " Atom, is there a device that would allow Hawkgirl to camouflage her wings, hide them so she can go incognito without being noticed?" He said.

"Based on the nano-technology I use to manipulate my own molecular structure, yes it is possible. Mind if I ask why?" Atom said.

Trying his best to keep a straight face, but unable to repress a blush, Reverend Justice replied in a matter-of-fact tone of voice,

" I just don’t think it’s fair that she can’t go out in public when she’s off duty, without having a mob of reporters harrassing her. Besides, that would help her with her investigations: she could investigate truly incognito." Reverend Justice said.

Atom looked back at him with an amused expression on his face,

"Then why doesn’t she ask me herself? And why now after all those years of not caring whether she gets recognized or not?" He said, with a teasing grin.

Batman frowned under his cowl. "Get a clue Ray! The man’s in love with her and would like to spend time with her without being bugged at every street corner, or without risking to blow his cover if they’re seen dressed as civilians!" Batman said.

"Okay, I got it the first time!" Atom said, grinning, "I couldn’t resist pulling a rib on the new guy! It can be done. I will need her wing span and a DNA sample. The data has to be specific so the molecular manipulations are precise and controlled."

Batman stepped to the Bat-Computer’s keyboard and pressed a few keys. A printout came out.

"There you go Ray." He said, handing him the printout, which had Hawkgirl’s exact wingspan.

Atom and Reverend Justice looked at him in astonishment.

Batman smirked "What? Who do you think designed her backpack?" He said.

He walked to the pile of clothes Joey had left on the floor before the fitting. Batman pulled a long red hair from Joey’s T-Shirt with tweezers.

"Definitely not yours Rev." He said. He put Shayera’s hair in a small sample bag from his utility belt.

Going over Joey’s jeans, he found a small gray feather clinging to one of the back pockets.

"Unless this is from your apartment, I’d say its from Shayera’s wings. All of the pillows and comforters in the Watchtower's living quarters are hypoallergenic and use artificial material." Batman said.

"Not from my place either Batman: I’m allergic to dust mites, all of my pillows and comforters are also synthetic." The Reverend replied.

Batman picked up the small feather with his tweezers and added it to the DNA sample bag. He handed it to Atom: "Will this do Ray?" He said.

"It certainly will Batman! Give me a few hours, I’ll have a working molecular manipulator ready!" Atom said. He transported back to his lab at Ivytown University.

"I guess I’ll have to leave a message to Shayera that I’ll be late for dinner!" Reverend Justice said.

"Plenty of time ahead of you yet," Batman said. "You can meet her in time for dinner and offer her your surprise if it’s ready. I suggest you have a tryout sparring session to get a feel for the suit, see how well you can move in it."

"Sound advice. " The Reverend said.

"How about right now? We can have a Quarterstaff session if you like, see how well you can handle weapons with gloves on. It won’t be electrified like the one you’re getting, but you might as well get a feel for it since it will be part of your gear." Batman said.

Reverend Justice nodded. They sparred for a good hour or so. Batman was clearly more experienced, with the Reverend trying the best he could to keep up with him, staying on the defensive.

"Don’t get discouraged Rev – the average criminal won’t be as experienced as I am, and your Quarterstaff will be electrified. You have the basics down pat, all you need is a bit more practice." Batman said.

"It means a lot coming from you brother Batman." The Reverend said, catching his breath.

Wonder Woman walked in, dressed in white track pants and a red sweater.

"Are you boys still at it?" she asked with a grin.

"Just giving the Reverend a sparring session, see how well he moves in the new suit!" Batman said, walking towards her. They kissed.

"You look sharp Joey! Or should I say, Reverend?" she said.

"You’re far too kind Ma’am!" Reverend Justice said in his mock Cajun accent, gallantly tipping his hat to her.

"With a bit field training he’ll do great, a valued member of my Gotham Knights." Batman concluded, shaking hands with Reverend Justice.

"I can’t wait for the end of the month when all of my gear is ready!" Reverend Justice said.

"And I promise: You’ll have a ride of your own fairly soon. The Wayne Enterprises Automotive department has a prototype nearing completion. I’ll be adding a few modifications myself. ‘The Charriot’ should be ready soon. Don’t let the name fool you: you’ll like it!" Batman said.

"I know I will brother Batman, I know I will!" The Reverend said.

The transporter buzzed. Atom was back. "Reverend, Batman, it's ready – oh, hi Diana!" he said.

Wonder Woman waved at him. He walked towards Reverend Justice carrying a unit the size of a large belt buckle.

"All you need to do is clip it on to Shayera’s belt." he said, holding it up for Batman and Revered Justice to see.

"In laymens terms, it's powered by her own body energy, operates with her brainwaves – I had to do a bit of research in the Justice League's medical database, but it was well worth it!" Atom said, with a satisfied smile. "All she needs to do is focus on retracting her wings, and the molecular structure will compact to submolecular size, all the way under her skin. When she wants the wings back, all she needs to do is concentrate on expanding her wings, and they will return to their normal molecular size."

He handed the device to Reverend Justice, who slipped it in one of the many inner pockets of his trench coat.

"Thank you from the bottom of my heart Professor Palmer, I owe you one!" Reverend Justice said.

"You’re very welcome RJ, and please, call me Ray, or Atom! As Batman probably told you, we stick together! Now if you’ll excuse me I have a dinner date to attend!" He said, and transported out of the Bat-Cave as Batman, Wonder Woman and the Reverend were saying good-bye.

"I guess I have a dinner date to attend myself!" The Reverend said, smiling.

"As do we!" Wonder Woman said, putting her arms around Batman.

"Batman – Bruce, thank you for everything! Now that I have my own communicator I can transport back to the Watchtower on my own!" Reverend Justice said, picking up his jeans and T-shirt from the floor. "You both have a good evening!" He activated his communicator.

"Reverend Justice requesting transport, Bat-Cave to Watchtower 1." He materialized on the transporter platform near the mess hall.

Smirking, he activated his communicator again, "Reverend Justice to Hawkgirl, come in?" He said.

Shayera replied, a smile in her voice, "Oh it’s Reverend Justice now huh? Whereabouts are you?"

"I’m at the transport platforms near the Mess Hall you?" He said.

"I’m at the Gym, sparring with Black Canary," she said, "We were just taking a short break"

"Cool, I’ll meet you there. Reverend Justice out." He said.

Before he could terminate she said: "Can’t wait to see you Joey!"

He smiled. He proceeded towards the Gym.

Dinner Date

"I must say I like Alfred’s work, that’s a great look on you!" Shayera said, touching the Reverend’s cheek, but not squeezing his face.

Black Canary observed them discreetly, smiling to herself, taking a sip from a bottle of water. "Flash wasn’t exaggerating, Shayera does look a whole lot happier since she started dating Joey!" She thought.

"I feel spoiled!" Reverend Justice said. "How about I treat you to dinner tonight?

Shayera smiled. "Why Reverend I’d love to! But the journalists might hound us, hardly a romantic date!" She said, looking a bit disappointed.

"I have a surprise for you!" Reverend Justice said, smiling. He pulled the Molecular manipulator from his trench coat pocket. "Courtesy of the Atom! Clip this to your belt and say hello to a new level of anonymity! My way of thanking you for a wonderful birthday party…and gift!"

Shayera took the Manipulator and clipped it on her belt. "Of course you realize if this was from anyone else than Ray Palmer I wouldn’t even consider it. But a quiet romantic date is a luxury I could never have before…how do you work this thing?" She said, giving the Reverend a loving look.

"Ray said all you need to do is concentrate on retracting your wings, and they would shrink to submolecular size. To get your wings back, concentrate on expanding your wings." He said, smiling.

Shayera gave him a quick kiss. Black Canary smirked and turned away, "Mind your business Dinah!" She thought, heading towards the showers.

Shayera straightened up and said, "Wings in!"

To their astonishment, her wings shrank to submolecular size, seemingly under Shayera’s skin.

"That kind of tickled!" she said, smiling. He took off a glove and felt her back – the smooth skin where her wings were just a few seconds ago.

"And that feels kind of nice!" She said, as his hand was on her back.

She leaned forard to kiss him again, and fell in his arms.

"Whoa! It’ll take me a while to get used to walking without the wings!" she said with a surprised look on her face.

"You’ll just have to hold onto my arm!" The Reverend said, smiling. "Wanna try restoring your wings?"

She straightened herself up.

"Wings out!" she said. Her wings returned to normal size.

"That’s wicked!" she said with a smile. "Remind me to thank Ray! And thank you for thinking of me!" She kissed him.

"Looks like the Reverend’s suit is keeping her from squeezing my face to pucker me up…I’ll take it!" he thought as they kissed.

"I’ll go to my quarters and change." She said, smiling.

"I’ll do the same and meet you there. We can transport to my place in Gotham and from there, you choose the Restaurant, Movie, Theater… your choice, my treat!" he said, with his mock Cajun accent.

She winked at him and headed towards her quarters. He ran to his. He showered and shaved, brushed his teeth and slicked his hair back. He put on a fresh set of clothes - black loafers, black pants, blue shirt and a black blazer. He looked in the mirror – didn’t like it.

He took off the blazer and blow-dried his hair. "Better" he thought. He changed the blue shirt with a black one and rolled up his sleeves. "Clean but casual, that’s me all right!" He hung his Reverend’s suit in his closet. "I’m not on active duty yet!" he thought with a smile. He proceeded to Shayera’s quarters.

She greeted him wearing a stunning low-cut back pink pastel dress, striking a sensuous pose.

Joey looked at her gape-mouthed, in genuine amazement.

"Shy you look hot! Now I’m feeling underdressed!" He said.

"Oh you look fine!" she said with a smile, "Though you could use a bit of a make-over!"

"Well then Miss Hol, how about I make good use of my Wayne Enterprises Expense Account and you can make me over to your liking!" he said, returning her smile.

"Sounds like a plan!" She said, holding onto his arm. "Wings in!" she shivered. "It tickles!"

They walked to the nearest transport pads and transported to his apartment in Gotham City.

"Nice digs Joey, how come you never invited me here before?" she asked.

"At first I felt a bit overwhelmed by the training. Then I wasn’t sure if you were actually attracted to me or if you were just being nice. Then you beat up some sense into me!" he said, holding her close, kissing her passionately.

"Ready for your make over Mr.Lucas?" She asked, holding onto his arm.

"Oh I’m ready Miss Hol!" he said with a smile. "My car should be in the parking lot with a full tank of gas. Mr. Wayne saw to it my license, registration and insurance were kept up to date…. Best damned employer on the face of the planet!"

They took the elevator down. Shayera would let go of Joey’s arm for a few seconds, trying to get her sense of balance back, then she would grab onto his arm again.

"I’m getting used to it, really!" she said with a giggle.

She wore a different belt, the Molecular Manipulator securely clipped to it.

The entered the garage. "Nice set of wheels!" she said.

"Nothing fancy, but it serves me well!" he said with a smile.

They got in the car. They first drove to Rightfit Taylors, where she hand picked him a dark blue suit.

"Dark colors suit you well," she said, then leaned to whisper in his ear "But we don’t want you to wear black all the time!" and smiled. She sat on a chair, still getting accustomed to her wings being shrunk under her skin.

She picked a white shirt and lighter blue silk tie for him. As for shoes… "black loafers go well with everything" she said with a wink.

He put the clothes on his expense account and asked the store manager "May I use your fitting rooms to change? I’m taking the missus out!" and smiled at her.

"By all means sir. Here’s your receipt, and a bag to put your clothes in." The manager said.

Joey changed and stepped out of the fitting room, bag in hand.

"Who are you, and what have you done with my Joey?" Shayera said with a grin.

"Hardy har har! Funny girl!" he said, and kissed her. "Any preferences for Restaurants?"

She held onto his arm as they walked back to the car. "I do have a soft spot for Chinese food!" she said.

"Chinese it is! How does the Emperor’s Pagoda sound?" he said.

"Delicious!" she said, smiling.

They climbed in the car.

Dinner was great. Shayera was enjoying a new level of privacy, and she revelled in every second of it. She managed to have a romantic dinner with her beau, with no cameras flashing or curious glances. They could kiss at the table and no-one cared.

They were having their after-dinner coffee.

"Movies, dancing, or the Theatre? You decide!" Joey said, smiling.

"Movies!" Shayera said. "I haven’t quite gotten the knack of walking…" she leaned across the table to whisper at him "without the wings; let alone dancing." She smiled. "But I’ll get the hang of it! And I’m not much of a Theatre fan."

Joey nodded and paid the bill leaving a tip. They drove to the Cineplex. He was so happy he would have gladly watched a chick flick with her. To his surprise – "then again maybe not, she is a warrior after all" he thought to himself- she chose the latest action-hero flick.

Not that they saw much of it – Shayera had snuggled up against him and began kissing him… they carried on like lustful teens for most of the movie.

"My first time necking at the movies without people staring! " she whispered in his ear with a smile.

After the movie, they walked back to the car, Shayera still keeping her balance by holding onto Joey’s arm. A girl was selling long stem roses on the sidewalk.

"Want one?" he asked.

"I’m usually not much for gifts…but I’ll break your arm if you don’t!" she said, grinning.

He bought her one, and handed it to her.

"Thanks Joey. This was a wonderful evening." She said, smelling the rose. "just being able to be with you without the constant interruptions of journalists and fans…I love it!" She smiled.

"It ain’t over yet Shy." He said letting her in the car. "Nightcap at my place?"

"You’d better!" she said, puckering his face again, kissing him.

She giggled as he rubbed his face.

"At least you squeezed a bit gentler." He said with a smirk, getting in the driver’s seat. They buckled up and she leaned on his shoulder.

She smiled, "I know, I’m usually not this touchy-feely…but I’m not myself tonight!" She said.

"Am I complaining? I like it when you’re touchy-feely!" Joey said, returning her smile.

He held her hand as he drove back to his place.

They walked in his apartment. Her sense of balance was improving, she walked to the couch with no problem.

"Care to pick up where we left off at the movies?" she asked with a smile, her beautiful eyes shining.

"I’d love to!" He said, taking off his jacket. "Would you like coffee or something stronger?"

"I’m not much for alcohool Joey. Agreed the rum punch was good in small doses." She said.

"I could fix you a café cognac- I promise I’ll take it easy on the cognac!" he said.

"Please do…then haul your rear end back here! It’s not often I get to lean my back on a couch … with a man I’m crazy about!" she said, still smiling.

"I promise I’ll be quick." He said.

She reached over to the coffee table for the remote control and turned on the TV. She flipped channels and stopped on one particular channel.

"Joey! Your friend Mike’s on TV!" She said.

He stepped out of the kitchenette. Indeed "Marvelous Mike" was giving an interview, MCW was on the air.

"I’ll be! Looks like old Ed got a TV deal after all!" he said.

She turned the volume up. Mike was in mid sentence.

"I’ve never backed down from anybody in the business. I’ve won the MCW title 5 times and if that weazel Fujiyama doesn’t duck me, it’ll be 6!"

"Way to go Mike!" Joey said, bringing Shayera her café cognac. "Not too strong?"

She took a sip. "Perfect! Thanks Joey!" She kissed him on the cheek. He went to the kitchenette for his own café cognac.

Mike was still rambling on TV, "As far as my buddy Luscious Joe Lucas goes, he didn’t quit, he never quit. Quit isn’t in his vocabulary."

Joey sat beside Shayera with an amused smile on his face and took a sip. They listened on.

"He was barred, he was black-listed, but he never quit. The man was barred for standing up for what he believed in. If Justice had anything to do with it, he’d still be here, he would have won the MCW strap a few times himself, along with the Inter Cities title. Nobody badmouths my pal."

"Justice is my middle name now old friend!" Joey said, putting on his Cajun accent.

Shayera put her coffee on the table and leaned on Joey. "It’s okay to take the tie off now Mr Lucas!" she said, undoing his tie.

He put his coffee on the table too. He put his arms around her. "You can stretch out your wings if you like, you must be getting cramped!" he said.

"Surprisingly, they feel fine – they’re so small they don’t feel restrained at all, it’s amazing! Besides…" she leaned closer to whisper in his ear "I’ve never done it without the wings before!"

"Why Miss Hol I do believe you’re blushing!" he said with a grin.

They began kissing again. The announcer on TV was rambling on in the background, neither Shayera or Joey cared. Before they knew it they’d made their way to the bedroom.

Having the wings shrunk to submolecular level made for a level of closeness Shayera wasn’t accustomed to …and she liked it!

They made love. For the first time in his apartment, for the first time without the wings. She enjoyed every minute of it, as did he.

The only snafu being that she had to keep the belt with the Molecular Manipulator on herself to keep the wings that size …oh well, so be it. Joey didn’t seem to mind and she revelled in every new sensation.

They laid down to sleep. Another first for her was that they could now spoon. In the well air-conditioned bedroom, he kept her warm and … while she never felt unsafe when she slept, it gave her a sense of security she had never felt before.

"Now I understand what the big deal is with spooning, it’s rather…enjoyable!" She thought drifting into sleep, Joey’s arms around her.

Training Assignment

She gasped awake. Joey wasn’t next to her.

"Joey? Where are you?" she asked. She could smell coffee and bread toasting. Joey walked in with breakfast on a tray.

"I tried to surprise you!" He said, smiling.

"Breakfast in bed? Why Mr. Lucas, you’re spoiling me!" She sat up, smiling back at him.

"First morning after our first night out, after we made love for the first time in my apartment, away from the League…after so many firsts I wanted to make this special!" He said.

He put the tray on her lap. Kissing her.

"Toast, scrambled eggs, bacon and coffee, I’ll be too heavy to fly!" she said with a grin.

"We’ll transport back to the Watchtower and change into our uniforms," she said between bites. "I have Sentry duty today, and you have a training assignment!"

Joey smiled. "Action! Unfortunately, none of my gear is ready yet, Batman said my electric Quarterstaff should be ready soon but…" he said, voice trailing off

"Robin will lend you one of his," she said with a smile. Batman’s arranged for you to assist Tim on his Assignment today, a tryout for the Gotham Knights."

Joey nodded. "My, you’re a fast eater!" he said, bending forward to to take the tray. She kissed him. "You need a shave!" She said, grinning.

"Yes ma’am!" He said, chuckling. "Meet you in the shower?"

"I’ll race you! " she said. "Wings out!" her wings speread out. She removed her belt and headed towards the shower.

They showered together again.

"Our own little ritual Joey?" She said.

"Yeah, Id’ like that!" He said. They kissed as the water washed over them.

About an hour later, they transported back to the Watchtower.

"I’ll be personally watching your back from the Monitor Womb!" she said with a wink.

She kissed him discreetly. They went to their respective quarters to change.

"My Angel indeed, watching my back from up above!" he thought, with a smile.

He dressed in his Reverend Justice suit, and could not get rid of the beatific smile on his face, thinking of her.

"Batman to Reverend Justice, come in!" his communicator chimed. He jumped.

Stifling a giggle, he replied. "Reverend Justice here Batman, what’s up?"

"Meet me and Robin at transport pads 6. Batman out."

"Nice talking to you too…" he mumbled. "Oh well, this is business after all."

He got to the transport pads. Batman was standing there, talking to Robin. Robin noticed him first.

"Joey- I mean, Reverend! Love your new threads!" Robin said. They shook hands.

"Much obliged brother Robin, I have a great taylor!" he said, tipping his hat.

Batman didn’t seem to be in a bad mood at all … at least, no more than what was usual for him.

"How did the dinner date go?" he asked.

"Absolutely great! Remind me to get Ray a birthday present!" the Reverend said. "How did yours go?"

Batman’s expression hardened, he started at Reverend Justice quite sternly. Reverend Justice’s face became stone cold as he held Batman’s stare.

Robin looked on thinking "Oh my God, don’t tell me they’ll come to blows over this?"

After several seconds of awkward silence, Batman finally smirked.

"Very well done Rev! Maintain the gaze, never show your opponent whether you’re nervous, intimidated or angry…great poker face!" He said, also shaking his hand.

"I had a great teacher in you brother Batman!" Reverend Justice replied with a smirk, using his fake Cajun accent. "You happen to have the best poker face on Earth! And this mask hides my eyes so well you can’t see if I’m blinking or shifting my eyes!"

"My dinner date also went well," Batman said. "I have a few surprises for you: I’ve put a few ‘Justice League rush jobs’ on Mr Fox’s desk." He pulled a duffle bag from behind him. "Your energy Quarterstaff is ready."

"Sweet!" Reverend Justice said. Batman handed him the Quarterstaff.

"Like Robin’s it’s telescopic and will fit well in one of your trenchcoat pockets, or clipped to a belt. The first button extends to Quarterstaff to its full length…" Batman said.

Reverend Justice pressed the button and saw the Quarterstaff extend with a satisfied smile.

"…pressing it again retracts it to its compact size. The second button activates the electric charge. Not enough power to cause injury, but enough to discourage any opponent to grab hold of it." Batman continued.

Reverend Justice retracted the Quarterstaff and stored it the compartment in his left sleeve. Batman nodded.

"Here are the stunner attachments for your gloves." Batman said.

He clipped them on. "In order to not to fire them in error, Mr. Fox came up with safety releases here and here." Batman said, pointing at the Cross ornaments on the stunners. "Hitting them by accident during a fight won’t arm the trigger, you need to pull the safety all the way back, let it snap back into place, aim, them release the stun bolt by squeezing your fist."

Reverend Justice stared at his gloves.

"I promise Brother Batman that I will only use them as a last resort." He said, looking up at Batman. "And I have an idea, it might be a life saver for those of us who don’t have power of flight."

"Do tell, Reverend!" Batman said, with genuine interest.

"In my spare time, I've been doing some brushing up on Justice League records. As you may recall, a few years ago, Carter Hall tried to convince Hawkgirl they were the reincarnations of Prince Khatar and his consort Chay-Ara." Reverend Justice asked.

"I recall vividly," Batman said, "Shayera didn’t speak to me for at least a month when she realized I’d planted a bug on her mace!"

"Carter Hall could fly like a genuine Thanagarian using a fragment from a Thanagarian artefact he had found through an Egyptian dig, and with artificial wings." Reverend Justice said.

"Yes, the n’th metal, worth a fortune on the black market. I have kept a few souvenirs from the Thanagarian Invasion attempt." Batman said.

"Suppose for the sake of argument that we Justice Leaguers who do not have power of flight were to keep a small piece of n’th metal on ourselves, just enough to act as a parachute in case of emergency? Not to fly like our gifted colleagues, but just to save our necks when we need to bail out of a plane or roof top?" Reverend Justice said.

"You might have something there!" Batman said. "I’ll see what more n’th metal I can find and get cracking on insulated compartments, so we don’t hover like hot air balloons. Until we do, keep this under wraps – n’th metal is hard to find, and the few Thanagarian weapons I’m keeping in my Trophy Hall are virtually indestructible; getting a fragment from one might be impossible. We might not be able to outfit every Justice Leaguer, so we don’t want to create false hopes."

All three exchanged a knowing look.

"Loose lips sink ships. Still…wouldn’t it be great? That would be the ultimate safety device for all of us!" Robin said.

Batman looked at them both and said, "And now, your training assignment! Robin will show you the ropes. It entails a lot of waiting, surveillance work and getting tips from the Monitor Womb, and from Oracle who will be monitoring the police frequency band. And of course, it entails getting involved if trouble arises."

"So when do we start?" the Reverend asked with a smile.

"Right now," Robin said. "We’ll transport to the roof top of the old Warehouse near the Lady of Gotham Park-probably the best vantage point for us to monitor the area. There have been a number of purse snatchings in the area. Commissioner Gordon's men have already arrested one member of that gang, but he’s not talking."

"The gang seems to operate near the Warehouse and in the park. Your mission is to keep a sharp eye, apprehend any wrong doers and call Gotham PD for backup. Oracle will patch you directly to them if you request it. Now you two be careful, no unnecessary risks." Batman continued.

Robin and Reverend Justice nodded, as they stepped onto the Transport pads.

"Robin to Monitor Womb, direct transport request for two, coordinates Lady of Gotham Warehouse rooftop." Robin said.

"Monitor Womb to Robin, transporting to coordinates, now." Hawkgirl’s voice said.

They materialized on top of the Warehouse.

"Of course, we usually use regular means of transportation. We used the Watchtower’s Transport system because there are no sites large enough for the Javelin to land around here." Robin said.

"Still pretty amazing considering the distance we’ve covered in a few seconds!" the Reverend said.

"You ain’t seen nothing yet!" Robin said, smiling. "Let’s make sure the uplinks are working. Robin to Oracle, do you copy?"

"Oracle here Tim, the uplink is up and running. Reverend, we haven’t formally been introduced - I’m Oracle, and I’m pleased to meet you. Batman is showing great faith in you, and that’s a great endorsement." Oracle said.

"I am very flattered Oracle, pleased to meet you too. I hope I am deserving of Batman’s faith!" Reverend Justice said.

"Robin to Watchtower 1, do you copy?" Robin continued.

"Watchtower 1 to Robin, Hawkgirl here, made it there in one piece, boys?" Hawkgirl said.

"That we did Hawkgirl, is the Watchtower uplink working?" Robin said.

"All’s in working order, oh, and Robin, make sure my boyfriend stays out of trouble!" Hawkgirl said.

Reverend Justice blushed as Robin giggled. He could just picture her grinning wickedly at the console.

"Oh thanks for that Shy! I’m going to have to have a word with you!" he said in mock annoyance.

Hawkgirl laughed heartily. "Just be sure to come back to me in one piece Preacher, I’m watching you!" She said.

"Hey, what about me?" Robin said, "Aren’t you concerned I come back in one piece too?"

"Don’t take it personally Robin, I’m just very fond of the good Reverend!" she said.

"Hey, he’s my pal too!" Robin said, smiling. "We’ll keep our eyes peeled."

"I have your backs boys, Watchtower 1 out!" Shayera said.

Robin looked at Reverend Justice, smiling.

"Don’t be mad at her, she was only teasing." Robin said.

"Oh I know." The Reverend said, chuckling. "You’ve probably gathered I’m absolutely crazy about her by now."

"Yes, and I have a hunch the feeling is mutual." Robin said, with a smirk on his face. Robin pulled a pair of compact binoculars from his utility belt.

"Okay Rev, shop talk: simply stated, we keep watch on the streets below; we can cover different sides of the building. If anything comes across Oracle's Police Monitoring system or from the Watchtower’s systems, the communicators will beep to alert us, and Hawkgirl or Oracle will give us the details, depending on where the info’s coming from." Robin said.

"Understood." The Reverend said, nodding.

They heard a shriek coming from the west side.

"I get the feeling we’re needed now!" The Reverend said.

Robin looked down from the west side of the Warehouse’s rooftop.

"Spotted them, take the fire escape Rev; I’ll use a rope down and cut off his escape route."

The Reverend nodded and proceeded down the fire escape. The building was 8 floors high.

"Just hold onto the ramp and don’t twist and ankle… or break a leg." He thought.

Robin was already handling the culprit … or rather culprits. Robin was handling both men quite nicely; but two on one were never good odds. Reverend Justice arrived on site, and the odds were even.

His expression hardened as he stared at the two attackers. He pulled his Quarterstaff from his sleeve and deployed it.

"Now then my brothers, what motivates two fine boys like you to terrorize nice ladies and steal their purses?" The Reverend said, in a voice that would have made Batman proud. "Need any help Brother Robin?"

"I sure hope Batman finds a supply of n’th metal soon," he thought, catching his breath.

"I certainly could!" Robin said, as the thieves took a few cautionary steps back. "We have two more members of the purse snatching gang, Reverend!"

Just at that moment, the communicators beeped. Robin and the Reverend both answered almost in unison "Yes, we know!"

One of the thieves, tall and dark haired said, "Blaine, there's two of them!"

The short bald one said, "Yeah, I ain't blind! You handle nerd-boy; I’ll handle the new geek!"

Robin said "Nerd-boy?"

Reverend Justice said "Geek?"

"I do believe them’s fighting words Reverend!" Robin said.

"I do believe you’re right Brother Robin!" the Reverend said. "Your move chrome dome!"

The bald thief lunged at the Reverend with an angry grunt. The Reverend neatly sidestepped him, tripping him with his Quarterstaff.

Before the bald thief –Blaine- could recover; the Reverend was pinning him to the ground with a boot to the throat.

Robin had the tall, dark-haired one also pinned to the ground with an arm lock, as he pulled handcuffs from his utility belt.

Reverend Justice spoke up in a theatrical voice.

"Welcome to the Church of Hard Knocks my brothers! Today’s sermon is given to you courtesy of Batman’s Gotham Knights; I am your preacher, Reverend Justice!"

He stared at the thief squirming under his boot. His voice became dark and cold.

"You two punks better pay close attention to this sermon ‘cause I really hate repeating myself. I don’t take too kindly seeing defenceless women being terrorized and robbed, none of us Gotham Knights do, and you can count your blessings Batman isn’t here himself to take it out of your sorry hides. As of today, this is my Church, and the commandments are simple: thou shalt not steal, thou shalt not kill, and thou shalt not piss me off, or I shalt tan your hide, you can bank on that."

The bald thief tried to struggle from under the Reverend’s boot. He managed to pull a knife from his jacket. The Reverend powered up his Quarterstaff and knocked it from the thief’s hand, giving him a shock.

"Now why did you have to go and do that Brother Chrome Dome? You went and broke the third commandment! Do you give up or do I have to get tough on you?" the Reverend said, staring a hole though the thief’s face.

"Okay, I give, man, I give!" the bald thief said, tears coming out of his eyes.

"Robin to Gotham City Police, we need backup near Lady of Gotham Park and the abandoned Warehouse." Robin said.

The Police showed up. The woman whose purse had just been stolen was with them. Reverend Justice powered off his Quarterstaff and retracted it, returning it in his left sleeve.

As the thieves were being booked, Reverend Justice picked up the purse from the ground.

"I believe this is yours Ma’am!" he said, handing the victim back her purse.

"Oh thank you so much! I know you’re Robin, but you…," she said, teary eyed.

"He’s my pal, Reverend Justice; he’s helping me out today!" Robin said, "A member of the newly formed Gotham Knights!"

"Thank you both so much!" she said, as she left with the police to press charges against her attackers.

They returned to the rooftop of the Warehouse.

"My friend, that was awesome! Good work!" Robin said.

"You softened them up for me!" The Reverend said. "Besides, I was so nervous I thought I’d lose my breakfast!"

"Yes Preacher, good work!" Hawkgirl’s voice chimed in the communicators. "You both jumped in before I could warn you!"

"Or before I could," Oracle said, "You boys are fast workers!"

"We lucked out," Robin said, "This time they were stupid enough to strike right next to where we are rather than a few blocks away. We might not be so lucky next time. That’s only two more of a gang of 12 or 15 that were caught so far."

"Don't be so modest Robin, that was quick and decisive action you both took, your new partner couldn't ask for a better training assignment, and Reverend, I loved the sermon!" Oracle said, with a snicker.

"Oracle's right boys, that's probably some of the best field training the Preacher could get, he didn't freeze or choke, so you're a good trainer!" Hawkgirl added.

Reverend Justice cleared his throat.

"Oh, and you're a quick study Preacher!" Hawkgirl said in one breath, Oracle giggling through the communicator. He rolled his eyes under his mask, but chuckled in spite of himself.

"Thanks Shy!" he said, comically. He could hear Hawkgirl giggling along with Oracle. They terminated the link. He could visualize her laughing in the Monitor Womb.

He turned his attention to Robin, who was also giggling.

"When do you know it’s time to call it a day Robin?" Reverend Justice asked.

"We’re only human, we have our limits, and we’re no help to anyone if our bodies collapse from hunger or from lack of sleep. For instance, I have a stiff school schedule, so I help the best I can. Most days, Commissioner Gordon’s men have things well in hand and we can have some quiet time without feeling too guilty about it." Robin said.

"Other times, we need to pull double shifts, and I need to call in sick days from school. Thankfully, ever since Batman has become serious with Wonder Woman, he’s learned to delegate more and more to other Justice Leaguers. His founding of the Gotham Knights has to be the best idea ever." Robin said, smiling.

"Which reminds me, why isn’t Batgirl here?" Reverend Justice asked.

"She pulled a double shift after your birthday party. Batman gave her an earful for not taking care of herself and getting some rest. She’s on forced rest right now." Robin said.

"No such thing as too many crime fighters Hawkgirl told me when she offered to sponsor me as a new recruit, the more of us, the more we can cover for one another." Reverend Justice said.

"Precisely." Robin said smiling. "I’m getting hungry, you?"

"Yeah, it’s getting close to lunch time! Not that I have any money on me, all of those pockets and I forget to bring money!" Reverend Justice said, shrugging.

"No worries, I have it covered" Robin said, smirking. He activated his communicator "Alfred? Are you busy?

Reverend Justice chuckled. Poor Alfred seemed to be on call 24/7.

"He’ll be here in 20 minutes with some Pizza and Iced tea!" Robin said.

"Great, I’m really getting hungry!" Reverend Justice said.

Alfred showed up moments later with pizza, hot and satisfying. Alfred exchanged quick greetings with them and returned to the car. "I need to get our good Reverend’s backup suit ready." Alfred had said.

Reverend Justice’s communicator beeped, on a private channel.

"Hey Joey, I’ve gotten some interesting news from Nightwing. Turns out, he’s one of the new investors in Metro-Cities Wrestling. Turns out, the other investor is none other than Bruce Wayne himself. Turns out the new investors are the main reason MCW got a TV deal. Turns out Nightwing and Starfire weren’t impressed with the shabby way you were treated there."

"Are you serious Shy?" He replied in a low voice.

"Couldn’t be more serious, Preacher. That’s the reason why they’ve been mentioning you on TV so much lately. You’ve made a lot of friends Joey." She said.

"Indeed I have! Is this channel secure?" he asked, keeping his voice down.

"Absolutely, just you and me!" she said.

"Would I be out of line telling my guardian Angel how much I love her while I’m on duty?" he said, back turned to Robin.

"Don’t worry, I won’t tell! Right back at you Preacher, I can’t wait to have you back up here with me!" she said in a near whisper.

"The feeling’s mutual! I think Robin wants my attention now … Reverend Justice out…mon Ange!" he said. He turned and saw Robin looking at him with a smile. He could not repress a blush.

"Don’t be embarrassed man, I think it’s wonderful!" Robin said.

"Thanks Robin! I guess I’m still getting my mind around the fact that a girl like her could love a guy like me…I’m blessed!" Reverend Justice said.

"Just appreciate the fact it happened at all: we hardly live normal lives. Nightwing told me a few words of wisdom given to him by Wonder Woman: don’t turn love away when it happens in our crazy lives." Robin said.

"Like I was saying: I’m blessed!" the Reverend said with a smile, opening a can of diet iced tea.

Robin did the same. The pizza was all gone but there was still plenty of iced tea left.

"Since we’re sharing secrets…don’t tell anyone, but since my ex broke up with me…it’s like I noticed Batgirl all of a sudden? I’m not sure if it’s her new outfit that did it, I mean, I can actually see her pretty mouth now…" Robin blushed, not believing he had just said that aloud.

Reverend Justice just gave him a friendly smile. Robin continued,

"Or maybe I just noticed her because I was on the rebound? I think I’m over my ex now…either way I feel nervous whenever I see C – Batgirl," Robin said, nearly letting ‘Cassandra’ slip, "I find her very attractive and very charming…in a girl who could kick my butt with an arm tied behind her back kind of way!" Robin said, smiling sheepishly.

"And with the other break-up still fresh in memory, you’re reluctant to make a move, worried things may become awkward within the Gotham Knights, or that she’ll reject you, or that she’ll beat you up …" Reverend Justice said.

"You’re really doing my self-confidence favours there, brother!" Robin said.

Reverend Justice chuckled, "The point is, if you’re meant to be with her, it will happen. Wonder Woman’s words of wisdom apply to all of us. There is no reason for Batgirl and you to be lonely or unhappy." Reverend Justice said.

Robin smiled.

Reverend Justice walked towards to south side of the rooftop and looked down at the dead end street.

"Robin? Could you bring your binoculars over here? Check this out!" Reverend Justice said.

Robin put his can of Iced Tea down, and pulled the compact binoculars from his utility belt again.

"Down there Robin, a gathering of 10-12 people I can’t make them out from up here." Reverend Justice said, not yet realizing his mask had a zoom setting.

Robin took a glance with his binoculars.

"My dear Reverend Justice, I think we’ve hit pay dirt…we’ll need backup though." Robin said, smiling.

"Hold on Robin, let’s just be sure we have the right people down there…Reverend Justice to Watchtower 1, can you hear me Shy?" Reverend Justice said.

"Watchtower 1 here, what’s up Preacher?" Hawkgirl said. "Preacher" had become Shayera’s term of endearment for Joey. He was growing accustomed to it.

"Could you point a satellite eavesdrop on the dead end street on the south side of the Warehouse, and patch it though our communicators? There’s a gathering down there and I’d like to hear what’s being said… see if we have more of our troublemakers." Reverend Justice said.

"Hold up Preacher," Hawkgirl said. "Got it! Here goes!"

"Thanks Angel!" The Reverend said. Angel, or mon ange, had become Joey’s term of endearment for Shayera.

"…and I say we lay low for a while! They already got Steve, Blaine and Scotty man!"

"They won’t say a word. They’re part of the brotherhood. They won’t sell us out."

"For how long Shane? How long until they take a plea bargain in exchange for our sorry asses?"

"They won’t talk okay? Now if you guys wanna wuss out – be my guests – but it’ll be back to the streets if you do! Blaine and Scotty were careless. No confrontation with the Cops or with the other crime fighters. They tried fighting and they were caught."

Robin and Reverend Justice exchanged a sideways smirk.

"Good work Hawkgirl, thanks to that eavesdrop we have enough of that discussion on tape to incriminate the lot of them." Robin said, smiling.

"Robin to Oracle, please patch me through to Gotham PD, we may have cornered the rest of purse snatching gang. Stealth force only, we don’t want them to scatter and run." Robin said.

Thankfully for them, the gang decided to hang around. Beers were opened, reefers were lit.

"They’re making our job easier, by the time the stealth force gets here; they’ll be too wasted to put up much of a fight!" Reverend Justice said, taking another sip of his iced tea.

Robin took a gulp of his can and nodded, "And they’re adding to the charges: consuming alcohol on public property, illegal possession and usage of cannabis on public property…they probably figured we wouldn’t stick around after we bagged their two pals." Robin said.

"Oracle to Gotham Knights and Watchtower 1, the Gotham Police stealth force is arriving; the gang is pretty much cornered, nice collar boys! All the same, stick around, just in case one of those weasels tries to slip through."

"Will do!" Robin and the Reverend replied in near unison. They looked at each other and giggled.

"If we do have to drop in on them I might as well go down a few floors now, keep watch on them from a second floor window." Reverend Justice said, finishing his iced tea.

"Good idea, make sure you stay out of sight though Rev." Robin said. Reverend Justice nodded.

Rather than the fire escape, Reverend Justice took the service stairs. His mask automatically switched to night vision. He thought with a grin "Good work Mr. Fox, Wayne Enterprises research is second to none!"

He made it to the second floor. Blending in with the shadows, he took a glance though the window, the progressive vision of his mask adapting to the light.

"Reverend Justice to Robin, do you copy?" he said in a low voice.

"Robin here Rev, what’s up? " Robin replied.

"They’re really partying down here; I count 6 men and 6 women, ages ranging between 16 and 25 I’d say. Nowhere for them to run: the first floor and basement windows all have bars blocking them." Reverend Justice said.

"There is a service door right beneath you," Robin said, "They might try to bust through there."

"Roger that little brother, I’ll get there now and see if I can’t barricade it." Reverend Justice said.

Once more blending with the shadows, he made his way to the ground floor and walked to the service door. There were several recycling bins and garbage containers, filled with concrete fragments, steel beams and broken cinder blocks.

"Oh great, heavy lifting! That wasn’t part of the job description!" he mumbled. He could hear Robin snickering through the communicator. He moved several recycling containers and placed them across the access door. "Thank God those containers have wheels!" He thought, wincing.

"Robin to Reverend Justice, the Police stealth force is moving in," Robin said "Are you ready down there?"

"Almost, little brother!" He armed his glove stunners and shot a few bolts at the recycling containers wheels, melting them.

"I’m ready now; the only way any one of them could go through here is if he’s 3 inches tall!" Reverend Justice replied, smiling.

"Meet you downstairs on the west side of the building, just in case some of the weasels try to slip out like Oracle said!" Robin said.

"Meet you there, little brother!" Reverend Justice replied.

He heard a scream coming from the dead end street. "Split it’s the pigs! What the hell? Our escape’s blocked!"

Reverend Justice laughed heartily as the gang tried in vain to push the containers out of the way.

He rendezvous’ with Robin on the west side street. He was also laughing.

"Nice work blocking that door big brother!" Robin said, playing along with Reverend Justice, as he kept referring to him as little brother. It was pretty cool, Robin liked that.

"Looks like the previous owners were trying to renovate before they shut down: there were several containers of concrete rubble, steel beams and cinder blocks. I blocked the door with a few containers and jammed the wheels." Reverend Justice said.

The Police stealth force had bagged the lot of them. The Officer in charge, Sgt. Ortega walked up to them.

"Great tip my friends! It’s only a matter of time until we locate their hide-out and recover the stolen property!" Sgt. Ortega said.

"We lucked out big time Sergeant: the gang became careless enough to gather right behind us, moments after their two accomplices were arrested." Robin said. "I have a feeling our new recruit is bringing us luck!" he added, looking at Reverend Justice, smiling.

Ortega shook hands with the two of them before climbing back in the Police squad car.

The police had left.

"Now is where I’d say we call it a day! I’ll check up on Batgirl see how she’s doing..." Robin said, pensively.

"Best of luck little brother!" Reverend Justice said, smiling.

"I only want to make sure she recuperated, that’s all." Robin said, with a sheepish smile. He took a small transmitter from his belt, a different one from the standard issue communicator.

"Redbird remote pickup to transmitter coordinates." Robin said. The Redbird rolled towards him via remote control, and stopped by his feet.

"Sweet, sweet ride you got there little brother and a smart one too!" Robin put his helmet on and they shook hands.

"Great first assignment big brother, I’m looking forward to doing this again!" Robin said, and drove off.

"Reverend Justice to Watchtower 1, come in?" Reverend Justice said.

"Watchtower here Preacher, that was one great performance!" Hawkgirl’s voice answered.

"You’re far too kind mon ange, transport request to Watchtower 1 from these coordinates, can you pinpoint my location from my communicator’s signal?" He asked, with a smirk.

"Patching your coordinates in now… Joey? Could you meet me in the monitor Womb and keep me company for the remainder of my Sentry shift?" Hawkgirl said.

"Try and stop me! Meet you there!" Reverend Justice said, as his body tingled from transport picking him up.

He materialized on the same platform he used to transport to the top of the building earlier that day.

He tried not to run to the Monitor Womb but could not help himself. He nearly collided with the Crimson Avenger on his way there.

"Whoops! Sorry to bump into you like this my long lost twin brother!" Reverend Justice said, noticing they wore similar trench coats and hats, only his were black while the Avenger’s were Crimson Red.

"Love your threads!" The Crimson Avenger replied with a chuckle.

"Sorry brother Avenger: ‘can’t keep my Angel waiting!" Reverend Justice said.

"It wouldn’t be polite!" The Crimson Avenger said. He had been part of the "Hawkgirl makes the first move" poll.

Reverend Justice continued towards the Monitoring Womb.

He tried to slow down as he neared the Monitoring Womb, noticing Vixen and Green Lantern chatting with Superman.

"RJ, good job," Green Lantern said, patting Reverend Justice on the shoulder, "Shayera told us of your exploits! Well done brother!"

"And the Gotham Knights are off to a great start, in part thanks to you!" Vixen said, giving him a high-five.

"To call this an’ Exploit’ is far too kind my friends! I’m just glad I didn’t screw up too badly!" Reverend Justice said, unable to repress a blush.

Superman also patted him on the shoulder, minding his own strength.

"Don’t be modest Joey, you kept your cool and handled things properly!" Superman said.

"Those compliments mean a lot coming from you my friends!" Reverend Justice said, smiling.

"Get in there," Superman said with a wink, "It’s not nice to keep your girlfriend waiting!"

Reverend Justice smiled and entered the Monitoring Womb. Hawkgirl saw him and smiled.

"Pull up a chair Preacher, I have one hour left." Hawkgirl said.

He sat down. She spread her wings and put her right wing around his back, pulling him closer.

She whispered in his ear, "Then I’m all yours for the rest of the day!" she kissed him discreetly before returning her attention to the Monitor screens.

One month later

Joey was driving to the Gotham Auditorium with Shayera by his side. He was dressed in his trademark black jeans and sneakers with a black T-Shirt.

Shayera’s wings were in their sub molecular retracted position, and she was wearing a white spandex T-shirt with a black stripe on the side, blue jeans and white sneakers. She had her hair up in a ponytail and decided to wear prop glasses similar to the ones Wonder Woman wore; to assure nobody would recognize her.

"I’m not sure this is such a hot idea Shy." Joey said. "I’m sure I’ve accumulated plenty of ring rust."

"It makes perfect sense Joey, and Bruce feels it would be a perfect cover for you, I happen to agree. Just promise me you won’t go too gung ho." Shayera replied.

"Me not going gung ho in the ring…what a concept! The long awaited return of ‘Luscious Lucas’ to Metro-Cities Wrestling after a five-year hiatus." Joey said with a smile. "All the while still on Wayne Enterprises’ payroll!"

He parked in the Auditorium’s underground parking. They took the elevator to the main floor. They were several hours early to the upcoming broadcast.

Joey sighed as they were walking towards the offices, Shayera no longer needing to hold onto him to keep her balance.

"Told you I’d get the hang of this!" she told him with a proud smile.

"That’s wonderful Shy!" Joey said, putting an arm around her shoulders. "Be forewarned, Eddie Delgado can have the manners of a bull; don’t let him get to you."

"I’ve dealt with my share of low-lives Joseph, I can take it!" Shayera said "Don’t forget: at this stage, Dick Grayson and Bruce Wayne are your true bosses, not Eddie Delgado." She added with a smile, leaning on him.

He kissed her. They were at the makeshift MCW office door. Joey knocked.

"Come in!" Joey recognized Ed’s voice. They entered. They sat down. Ed was lighting up a cigar, not bothering to extend a hand.

"Lucas, I don’t know how you pulled this off, but you’ve made some very powerful friends. Condition one to the TV deal: we had to relocate the promotion in Gotham City. Condition 2: there must be a guaranteed per diem and health benefits to all employees, unheard of in this line of business, but hell; not my money so what do I care." Ed said, taking a puff of his cigar, shaking his head.

Shayera looked at Joey, "Is he for real?" She said sounding irate.

"Oh, and he’s in a good mood today!" Joey said, with a sarcastic smile, eyebrows arched.

"Whatever, I no longer run this show, well not really. I’m only here for name recognition – the once great luchador." Ed said, looking bitter. "Condition 3 was to offer you a return contract, with full benefits and a light schedule."

Old Ed gave Joey a spiteful look.

"Tell me Chico; was she worth selling out for? Did the cute redhead get your cojones?" he said, looking at Shayera with disdain.

She got up, fist clenched, ready to swing at the insolent old man. Joey held her arm.

"Please baby, let me handle this." Joey said, fuming.

He got up, and gave Ed a look that was making the old veteran extremely uncomfortable. Eddie could feel his lumbago beginning to flare up again.

"Pay close attention to me you old bastard, you’re in no position to lecture anyone about selling out. I have a life. You need me one hell of a lot more than I need you, and she is my number one priority." He said, pointing at Shayera, whose stare had turned from Eddie to Joey. Joey was really letting old Ed have it.

"You disrespect her in any way shape or form ever again and I leave you to explain to your investors how you couldn’t be enough of a professional to address her and me in a respectful manner and how you were a bastard to the woman I love. Your choice pendejo, change your tune fiddler or we walk." Joey said, looking livid.

Ed lowered his eyes, and put out his cigar.

"I…I apologize to the both of you. I’m a bitter old man who can’t stand seeing his life’s work slipping through his hands. Truth is, since your friends took over the reins, MCW has bee thriving…and that’s hard for a proud man like me to accept. Please sit down".

Joey sat down still looking in Ed’s eyes, face stone cold. Shayera put her hand on his shoulder, looking at him with pride. Joey sat back down.

"Honestly, your investor friends came up with a great idea: tonight’s main event will be your pal Marvellous Mike in a non title bout against Hiro Fujiyama. The current tag champions, the Shoguns, will jump in and proceed with a 3-man beat down. They all know a surprise guest will jump in to Mike’s aid, even the security guards know, what they don’t know is that it’ll be you. Hiro expects a missile drop kick from the special guest. Here, this is for the two of you." Eddie said.

He handed them a few MCW souvenir caps.

"Make sure you keep the visor down low, so no-one recognizes you. You have ringside seats right next to Mr. Grayson’s." Ed said.

Joey nodded. Shayera pulled documents from her purse, handing them to Joey.

"This meeting is a mere formality; I wanted to be sure we understood each other. My attorney has already reviewed and ratified the contract. Pull any of your old shenanigans and this contract is null and void." Joey said.

He signed it, gave Ed a copy and handed his copy to Shayera, who put it in her purse.

"From now on it’s simple, Elegante Eddie; keep out of my face; I’ll keep out of yours, everybody’s happy." Joey told Ed, as he and Shayera walked out of the office.

They were walking towards the arena area. Shayera grabbed Joey’s arm and put it around her waist.

"Ashamed of holding me in public?" she asked, with a teasing grin.

"Never in a million years, you’re my pride and joy!" he said.

"Good answer!" she said and kissed him, knocking the cap off his head. He bent down to pick it up, laughing. They looked at the ring from the arena entrance.

"I never thought I’d say this: but I missed this!" Joey said.

"Oh really," Shayera said, her lips pursed in a mock hurt expression, "and here I thought you liked your life better since quitting!"

He picked her up in his arms, lifting her off the ground and kissed her.

"Oh but I do! This is just fluff. You’re my true priority Angel! You and the League, if it ever came down to a choice I’d ditch MCW without a second thought!" he said, still holding her off the ground.

"Good answer again!" she said, puckering him up.

"Ouch baby! Take it easy on the squeeze!" Joey said, as Shayera giggled.

"Get a room you two!" a voice said from behind them.

Joey put Shayera down. He recognized the voice of Dick Grayson. Joey did not need to piece their secret identities together as formal introductions had occurred when Bruce had suggested Joey’s comeback. They had become fast friends.

"Dick, Kory! How have you been?" Joey said shaking their hands.

"Keeping busy," Kory said, holding Dick’s arm. "How do you like your old hunting grounds Joey?"

"You’ve both done impressive work!" Joey said, putting an arm around Shayera’s shoulders.

"Ed didn’t give you too much attitude?" Dick asked.

"Joey handled him like a Champ," Shayera said. "Batman would have approved!"

They exchanged a knowing smile and went to their seats.

Later that evening

"The referee’s been knocked out of the ring and in come the Shoguns! Marvelous Mike is being taken apart! This is a three on one folks, I don’t know how much more punishment Mike can take… hey wait a minute, a fan has just jumped the security barrier, he’s climbing up the top turnbuckle…hey, that…that’s Luscious Lucas! He is back ladies and gentlemen!

Missile dropkick right in Fujiyama’s face! Sato of the Shoguns is taking him on now! By God, Joey Lucas hasn’t lost a step! He just knocked Sato over the top rope with a forearm shot!

Now Marvelous Mike is up and taking care of Hito while Fujiyama is running for higher grounds! They’re all running for cover! Vanity Fair’s back! Vanity Fair’s back!"

Mike and Joey hugged in the middle of the ring. Marvellous Mike Milano was smiling at the happy surprise. Joey raised Mike’s hand in victory, pointing at Mike’s waist for the cameras.

"Right here Fujiyama! The title belongs right here!" Joey screamed. He then went to ringside and gave Shayera a hug. He high-fived Dick and Kory as the crowd was on their feet, going nuts.

The show went off the air.
