Mountain Bagineti (Kartli) is situated on the right
bank of river Mtkvari (Kura) oposite Mtskheta. It
dominated over the river as big rocky massif. On the
north-east flank of hill during the archeological digs
was discovered citadel of ancient capital of Kartli
kingdom - Mtskheta. |

| The ancient written sources ascribe the foundation of
citadel to Kartlos and give the oldest citadel's name -
Kartli. Later it became the name of hole kongdom
("Kartli koveli"). |

The base of the fortress walls are built from the ashlar and walls are from raw brick. The thickness of walls reached 6-8 m. In walls are founded water pipes. | |||
| The citadel is mentioned by Roman authors as Armazike
already in I c. B.C. Here was the residence of ancient
Georgian kings and location of pagan sanctuary - deity
Armazi. |

The word "Armaztsikhe" is generated from two parts: "Arma" - is Hittite name of moon deity, that was declared by Parnaoz - the first king of Kartli (the end of IV - beginning of III cc. B.C.) as supreme deity of kingdom and "tsikhe" (in Georgian - fortress). | |||
| Archeological digs descovered two main phases of
town-planning: the first - before III c. B.C. , when in
Kartli widely used mortar; the second phase contemporize
with strengthening of Kartli kingdom, when big
construction works were realized. |

On the first stage of town-planning the main building
materials are: stone and raw brick.As a jointing material
was used: for stones fixing part in form of
"dovetail", for raw bricks - clay mortar. |

| The monuments of antique architecture and founded in
large quantities painted tiles confirm the Strabon's (I c.) information, that "Iberia for the most part is well populated with the towns and villages, in such way, that there is tiled roofs, houses are constructed in architecture style, there are bazaars and other public institutions". |
