YOUNG WOMEN'S TECH EMERGING CAREER/BUSINESS ENTERPRISES

This program will help you to develop your writing skills, and teach you to design and publish an online magazine that represents you, your ideas, issues and concerns. The goal of the program is to empower young women as powerful creators of content, to become more critical consumers of media, and to become active participants in the digital world.You will be learning about Media Literacy, designing of webpages, and using digital cameras. You will be taught HTML, Dreamweaver, Photoshop and other multimedia software.You will learn how to design business cards, and flyers, and be taught how to create a business plan. These skills will help you to begin to focus on career/business and educational choices as you plan for the future.

INTRODUCTION

You have finally come up with a great idea for your business. You heard there is going to be a citywide conference for future investors, which includes companies and individuals. During this conference there is going to be a segment where new businesses will be able to showcase their grand ideas. You have three weeks to prepare your presentations. Your task is to persuade these potential investors to provide the funds for you to get started. You will need $50,000 to start.

THE PROCESS

Seems like a lot of work huh? Yes, there is a lot to do. You might find the following list helpful. Have fun.

1. Become familiar with issues of Media Literacy.

2. Learn HTML terms and concepts.

3. Create home page.

4. Create slides in the Powerpoint program after gaining knowledge of this program.

5. Create a Digital collage in the Photoshop program after gaining knowledge of this program.

6. Analyze the differences between an employee and an entrepreneur.

7. Create a business plan.

    THE TASK

    You will have to decide on the following.

    1. The name of the magazine.

    2. Selection of articles for the magazine.

    3. People to interview.

    4. Appropriate time for editing the magazine.

    5. Choosing a business to start.

    6. Reflect on why this course differs from others you have taken.


    You will be expected to present your business plan in a Power Point presentation.

  • STUDENT REQUIREMENTS:


    Students will be required to do the following:

    1. Collect articles and pictures for the magazine.

    2. Search the Internet for articles and pictures relative to the Young Women's Tech program.

    3. Each student is expected and required to produce and design their own web page.

    4. Students must show basic computer knowledge for use of the Internet, scanners, and word processing, slideshow presentations, and other performed activity.(Includes knowledge of HTML, Dreamweaver, Power Point, Photoshop, and Excel).

    5. Research relevent topics in the library. The research will also require some materials downloaded via the Internet and other material from outside libraries.

    Students must show proof that they were actively involved in their group's presentations, and other performed activity.

    Groups must give presentations, interviews, write essays, show pictures, design web pages, and be involved in discussions. If time permits, students will produce videos and commercials. Students must show proficient knowledge and skills in each activity.

You have done quite a bit of research, making use of the resources of the Internet, and other media to find information that assisted you in planning and preparation of an on line magazine, and a business plan. The use of other sources such as the Photoshop, Dreamweaver, Excel, and Power Point programs, and other software allowed you to explore, evaluate and analyze material. Presenting a slide show using Power Point has enhanced your knowledge and communication skills. The use of theExcel program has allowed you to create charts and calculate expenses, which were helpful for the creation of the Business plan. Dreamweaver and the Photoshop programs have assisted you in the formation of a digital collage for your web page.The library visits and the various articles and books have contributed much in helping you improve your media literacy.How will you use the knowledge gained in your other subjects and in life?
