Breeding Time for River Oaks Kaylyn
On Monday, May 20 River Oaks Kaylyn was taken from her Lake of the Prairies home to a stallion that resides about 12 miles from our farm. Pipestone's Halden is a muscular Fjord with a wildly, uncut mane and very notable zebra strips on his legs.
Halden leads a unique existence for a Norwegian Fjord horse. While he does spend the spring, summer and fall with his little band of mares, when wintertime arrives, the mares are moved from the pasture and he spends his winters with a herd of several hundred buffalo cows and yearlings. He is a solitary figure among the buffalo.
River Oaks Kaylyn was the first mare to be introduced to Halden this spring, and he put on quite a show for her. He pranced and tossed his mane for her. Later that afternoon three more mares, along with their young ones joined Haldon and Kaylyn. The Fjords were well separated from the buffalo herd and were free to roam on their own, in a very large wooded area.
We expect Kaylyn to stay with Halden and his mares for about twenty-one days. After that, she will return to our herd and if all goes well, next spring she also will have her own little one to care for. |
