Drader was born at noon on May 8, 2002, precisely one year to the day after the birth of his full sister Lower Forty Heddie.
About a half hour before the delivery Serina was seen calmly walking down to the watering bowl for a drink of water. Grant had checked Serina earlier in the morning and there seemed to be no indication of impending labour at that time. Therefore, Grant continued his usual routine of working around the yard. At noon time he was on his tractor, and happened to look up at the paddock where Serina spent the majority of her time. He noticed a white animal laying in the hay with Serina. At first it seemed that Bear, the family dog had decided to pay Serina a visit. Upon calling to Bear, Grant discovered he was in fact in the yard. It was at that moment that Grant realized, that Drader had entered this world. He excitedly dismounted from the tractor and raced up to the paddock. Indeed, our first, long awaited foal had finally arrived. Grant rushed to the house to make a quick phone call, grabbed his camera and a good quanitity of newspapers and returned to Serina and Drader. He rubbed down Drader with newspapers in order to dry him off. In short order, Drader decided it was time to get to his feet. He was awkward and wobbly at first, but her persisted in his attempts and soon he was standing on his own.
Our first foal and his mom were both healthy and happy. |
