MIDWAY STILL
Initially building a fanbase with support slots on tour with Cud and Mega City Four, Paul Thompson (guitar/vocals), Declan Kelly (drums) and John Kanopka (bass) were more obviously influenced by US post-hardcore bands such as Husker Du and Dinosaur Jr.

First single 'I Won't Try' was released on Roughneck Records in July 1991, and displayed a melancholy lyric and vocal delivered over rumbling bass and raucous guitar noise, which would remain their trademark during their brief career.  The later single 'Better Than Before' improved on this formula, and came closest to achieving chart success in the wake of the grunge explosion that was kickstarted by Nirvana in the US.  The debut album 'Dial Square' (1992) was equally as impressive, if somewhat formularised.

Their image was not the standard fare of grunge merchants however, with a taste for Hawaiian shirts being noticed by those who saw them live.  A competition in the NME where readers were requested to design their logo received a poor response, as did their second album, released in 1993, 'Life's Too Long'.  Soon after this, the band dissolved and left a brief but interesting string of releases for devoted fans to console themselves with.
