CURVE
The most prominent member of this independent chart topping act was photogenic vocalist Toni Halliday.  Having been in involved in many projects since signing her first record deal at the age of 14, she joined up with songwriting partner Dean Garcia through shared links with the Eurythmics Dave Stewart.  Prior to Curve, Halliday and Garcia had formed State of Play, releasing two singles and an album.  They split temporarily, and Halliday released an unremarkable solo album before reuniting the partnership and launching Curve on Anxious Records.

Their first three E.P.'s 'Blindfold', 'Frozen' and 'Cherry' straddled the lines between indie rock and goth.  The success of these early releases spurred the band into building their own studio, and employing extra band members.  Despite this, the music press initially distanced themselves from the band, seeing Halliday as a blatant careerist due to her earlier projects being so far removed from the sound of Curve.

Two albums and further singles failed to build on their early promise, with later tracks being precursors to the direction that the goth scene would later take. Using electronic rhythms, samples and sounds that would eventually be successful for artists such as Marilyn Manson, the band continued until 1994, with the Garcia throwing in the towel due to constant touring estranging him from his two children.

Curve have remained active, and Halliday also recorded vocals for Leftfield's early hit 'Original', whilst second guitarist Debbie Smith went on to find further chart success with indie pop outift Echobelly. All of the more recent Curve releases have been made available via their official website, including 'The New Adventures of Curve' which came out in 2002.  Garcia also released a solo album in 2001 under the name of Headcase.
