[ Tori Amos ] Story: Days in Between Reason: This
song really nails the piece: reliance, mistakes, alcohol and absolution. Story: Wood and Nails Reason: Not
just about religion, but women who define themselves by men and women who are
victims even when they are strong enough not to be. [ Kate Bush ] Story: As Titled Reason: I love the magical, dream-like quality and the idea of
loss and hope fits the story perfectly. [ Elvis
Costello ] Story: Why Nineveh is
Still Standing Reason: The
line ‘I know this world is killing you’ really sums up the piece. When your
world is falling apart around you and only one person understands. [ The Cure ] Story: As Titled Reason: A gorgeous song that evokes the snapshot nature of the
story. [ The Eagles ] Story: Queen of Diamonds Reason:
Haunting, sad and beautiful; this song seems to
capture the impotency of the piece. Story: Queen of Diamonds Reason: When
you can’t find the right words to say, know you
shouldn’t say them anyway and alcohol is the only thing keeping you sane. [ Don Henley ] Story: As Titled Reason: Melancholy, mournful and sad but not nearly as painful as
the story. The irony is obvious, but if
you look closer then the song is about many more things. [ The Indigo
Girls ] Story: A Season in Hell Reason: This
was originally going to be the title of the piece before I
remembered the Rimbaud quotation. I still used it
for the summaries, though and the line “a moment of peace is worth every war
behind us” really seems to depict the relationship between Jackie and Robbie. [ Pavement ] Story: As Titled
Reason: The
song starts awkwardly and yet it soon finds a rhythm, much like the
characters. The oblique references to Hawaii are perfect for the story, as is
the line: ‘kiss me back into the past’. [ Carly Simon
] Story: The Colour of
Fire Reason: The
song is wistful and sad; its nostalgic elements conjure up the image of
childhood and safety. I especially like the lines:
“last night I slept in sheets the colour of fire/tonight I’ll lie alone again
and I’ll curse my own desires” because they capture the idea of the story
completely. [ The
Tindersticks ] Story: Days in Between Reason: Not
used in the piece, but the title is from here. A sad,
instrumental song about falling into bed with someone just because you can. |
