Kuwaguma watched Vegetable walk away, anger, surprise and hurt reflected in her expressive eyes. How could anyone think that way? Surely, he was only putting up a front...but he was so rude!
And so violent. As he vanished from her sight she tried to imagine what sort of environment this really was. Her homeworld wasn't anything like this, not at all. Her people were very peaceable in comparison, though she wouldn't have felt comfortable telling outsiders why that was the case. It was disorienting to find herself in a school where fighting and violence were a way of life, alongside with education. In fact, here physical, or mental, confrontation seemed to be a much higher priority than anything else, given that all other classes took place only once a week.
What was the student who had taken her place in her education system like to have been enrolled here? She hadn't met him or her at any point and wouldn't until he or she returned, some time in the distant future. There was so much pressure on her to adapt to her surroundings, but she wasn't sure how she was expected to deal with people like Vegetable. Humans must be more clever than she had anticipated, but they, like any species, were bound to have some impressive qualities.
She should find out what happened to that student. She hoped she hadn't kept him too long, but the taller boy (who hadn't even bothered to give her his name) had brushed her off very quickly so there wasn't a realistic chance of that. He might, however, be injured and she had told him she would be right back.
"See, here she comes. I think."
As Kuwaguma approached she couldn't tell what the boy was talking to, but she tried not to act as though she had overheard him, in case he hadn't meant her to. "Are you alright, little boy? Are you injured at all? Did he hurt you?" she asked him, concern clearly showing in her expression. |
