Pyrford nodded as Ulysses gave his answer. He was a bit puzzled by how shy and timid the boy was, but decided he'd just give him time and see if he couldn't coax him out of his shell. "Very good...' he looked down the class list and made an educated guess as to who the student was, knowing that it usually gave people a good feeling to have others know their name, 'Ulysses, is it?" Pyrford thought he saw the blonde student nod from his hiding place. Pyrford did his best to look encouraging as he asked, "Can anyone help Ulysses out by filling in the second half of the question?"
Andrew, sitting in the front row, put up his hand and the teacher nodded for him to go ahead. "One civilisation contributed through their invention of a method for smelting iron."
"Another excellent answer. You're all doing a fine job already. Can anyone tell me the name of that civilisation?"
Though it was obvious that even if Andrew had known the answer the teacher would have gone on to the next student anyway he was relieved that he hadn't waited to find out. Really, even though he had sounded sure enough of himself when he had given the answer, it had been a lucky guess on his part. Ancient Earth history was not something he'd studied in detail yet, not that he was entirely ignorant, but it was still just a guess.
The class waited for someone to put up their hand. |
