Xavier and Zelig were shocked out of their memories at the sound of the alarm. They actually paid attention to the announcement. They looked at each other and about the room in confusion as the room was sealed. A boy with a long braid jumped up from his seat as the windows were shut.
"Shoot! A lockdown!" he swore angrily.
He sat down in a huff.
Xavier looked at Zelig.
"A lockdown?" he repeated quietly.
"Sounds like trouble." Zelig said.
"But none of our business." Xavier said.
"Yes. It has nothing to do with us." Zelig agreed.
"Hey! What do you mean, 'nothing to do with you'?" the boy with the braid said suddenly, turning to face them.
Surprised at being spoken to, Zelig said the first thing that came to his mind.
"It has nothing to do with us. Our names were not mentioned." he said.
"Yeah, your names may not have been mentioned but it has everything to do with you." the boy replied hotly. "Do you have any idea what a lockdown is?"
Zelig shook his head. Xavier turned away slightly.
"Hey, I'm talking to you buddy." the boy said, reaching out and grabbing Xavier's shoulder to spin him around.
Zelig reacted instantly. His arm shot out to shove the boy's hand away and his knife appeared at the boy's neck. To his surprise, the boy deflected the knife out of his hand and grabbed both of his wrists with one hand.
"G-Zelig." Xavier said, moving to help.
"Stay there." the boy warned.
Xavier froze, torn.
"All I wanted was a little politeness. You don't ignore people." the boy said with a crazed gleam to his eyes. "I don't expect to get a knife to the throat for trying to get someone's attention so I hope you won't do it again."
He sqeezed Zelig's wrists for emphasis. Zelig nodded.
"I won't do it again." he promised. |
