The professor of Gunsmithing was tilted back in her chair, balancing it on two legs with her own resting on the desk in front of her.

The twisted metal was all around her, the glass of the burning door she found herself pressed against was searing hot and would not have budged even if she'd tried to move. Moving hurt, breathing hurt, it hurt too much. She thought she heard voices shouting in confusion, but they sounded far away. Then a single one separated itself. Her concentration wavered and faded until she was barely conscious. The smell was horrible. She made no response when the door was pried open and she was dragged out of the wreckage of her plane. She was beyond that now and she let her body sag as she passed out at last.

Yuka Teal-Lavoisier sighed and pulled the cowboy hat she'd worn that day further over her eyes so that she could barely see beyond its wide brim. A red rose lay on the edge of the desk, a tribute to the late Pierre Elliot Trudeau. She'd heard about his death just this morning over the radio and the event saddened her. She closed her eyes for a moment as the moment of renewed grief passed. When she opened them again she looked over the empty desks spread out in an orderly fashion as they waited for students to occupy their seats.
It was a small class this year. Just ten or so students. It was probably best that way. None of the names on her class list stuck out at all, which was definitely a plus. They hadn't had time to develop a firm ego. Sure, there were bound to be at least one or two students who thought they were invincible, but once they realised how insignificant they really were everything would go well.
Once again she tugged at the brim of the hat and this time succeeded in blocking out the light that made its way through the open window. She slid further down in her chair and yawned. She had a while until lunch so she might as well get some sleep.
