What is a Retention Pond?
A retention pond is a human-created indent in the natural landscape of a region for the purpose of collecting and holding surface water and storm water run-off until it evaporates or infiltrates into the ground.  In many areas, though, these ponds are built for the main purpose of increasing land values, as property backing on to a retention pond tends to be much more valuable.  The pond adds beauty and a sense of wilderness to the surrounding community and makes it look more desirable.  Unfortunately, these ponds can be sites for horse-play as well because they appear attractive to teens.  These waters are the sites of many drownings, with both children and adults as victims.  Retention ponds can be a lovely addition to any community if the proper care is taken to ensure the safety of all parties.  Plants and animals that would otherwise have difficulty fitting into the urban environment find refuge in these areas.
The retention pond in our neighbourhood is located on Lakewood Boulevard near the intersection with Willowlake Crescent.  It is approximately 120 000 square feet and the maximum depth is 12 feet.
