Lanzarote

 

Entrance to the Timanfaya
national park. An area which
covers approximately one third
of Lanzarote which has been
devastated by volcanic activity,
the last eruptions being in 1824.

 

A prickly pair! er, no sorry .... Prickly Pear, a cacti grown
for the beetle which lives off it and is crushed  to make
food colouring. So now when you have cochineal in your food
you know what your eating! .... and Sheila.

 

This restaurant cooks all it's food
over a volcanic vent from deep below.
Here we can see the kettle boiling.

 

Vineyards are a little different here, the vines are grown in their own little craters in the nutrient rich volcanic soil so as to protect them from the wind.
