Weird Photos...!

Time/Date 11:30pm Thursday 6th April 2000.

As Sheila and I walked home from our local pub we noticed some unusual shimmering clouds hovering in the sky. Suspecting the demon drink was affecting our vision we took only a passing interest in this strange phenomena. Arriving home we were greeted as usual by Laddie, our dog. I decided then to take Laddie out to a local field where I would get a better view of these clouds without the glare of streetlights. By a stroke of luck I remember there are four unexposed films left in my Olympus pocket camera, so (just in case) I took that too.

Arriving at the field it became clear what these shimmering clouds were..... The spectacular Northern Lights, or Aurora Borealis.

This is a very rare happening in these parts, in fact I have never seen them before except in books and on TV.

Luckily there is a flat surface available for me to place the camera on, so I set the camera to auto, place it in what I hope is a good position and press the shutter.

Photo No1 shows Butcher Hill and Moor Grange housing estate with the aurora shimmering above.

Photo No2 Butcher hill again, but this time the glaring lights of the local pub can be seen to the right and some stars can be seen through the aurora.

After a few minutes I decide to walk back home and persuade Sheila to come and see what surely is a once in a lifetime event.

As we walk to another nearby field the aurora is becoming more spectacular every minute, with great streams of red, yellow, blue and green light taking up the whole northern sky.

Unfortunately there are no flat surfaces to place the camera, so I have to lay it on the ground with the lens pointing straight up.

Photo 3 and Photo 4 are the spectacular results, can you name the constellations of stars visible?

The display lasted until well after 2am, shame I didn't have a faster film in the camera! Shame I didn't have more film in the camera! Shame I don't have a tripod!

When is the next aurora over Leeds? (you'll be lucky) but try the geophysical institute of Alaska website for current conditions, or the space weather bureau for the current state of the sun.

Bonus pic.....

A fleet of UFO's streak across the night sky over Moor Grange. OK, OK, you don't believe it, but I took the photo so I know the truth!
