It has been brought to the attention of the Fighting for the Future Slate that the Management for Streets and Sanitation has sent out a memo and told its members of Local 726 that they are not allowed to call in for individual sick days without a doctor’s note. We are allowed to use 5 of our vacation days as sick days per our contract. As you can see in the letter below from Local 726 made some stupid requests. It states that the employer reserves the right to ask employee to furnish proof of said illness. Some of these days that we take off are due to sicknesses that do not require us to go to the doctor. In our understanding of this contract, it states “Proof of Illness” so what that means to us is that aspirins, Pepto Bismol, etc., can be our proof of illness. Nowhere does it state you must bring a Doctor’s note, as it has been required from Management. Once again our present Executive Board needs to read our contract, stick up for its members and tell Management that you cannot change the rules anytime they want. You have a signed contract, abide by it.
