Tham
Jang is
a large cavern that was used as a bunker in the early 19th century in
defense against invading Yunnanese Chinese. A hermit lived and died
in the Tham Baat (Begging Bowl) cave and his rusting
begging bowl is supposedly still there. There is also the Tham
Pha Puak, Tham Phu Kham, Tham Phra
Jao, Tham Xang and Tham Hoi.
Though some have turquoise pools of water outside, many have little
to offer inside except a Buddha figure here, an elephant-shaped formation
there and a lot of damp darkness everywhere. For certain the journey
is the destination – they are fun to seek out and discover and well
worth the visit for adventurous types. Many have to be reached by walking
through rice fields, hiking through forests, climbing cliffs, wading
through rivers, by way of hired pirogue over higher waters and sometimes
by a tractor-pulled cart over muddy shallows!
