Status Overview

This page is here to clarify and expand upon the use of Status in the Resistance LARP. Hopefully this page will help everyone in understanding and using Status. First things first, if you haven’t read the section on Status in the Laws of the Night Revised, page 216 please do so. It is important for all the players to understand how Status works, so their characters can act accordingly.

Acknowledged = No status of note.
The Status trait Acknowledged is not a status trait that you can use, and hence should not be counted as a status trait when you announce your status. You have no status of note. Which is not the same as having No status. You must have the status of acknowledged for other kindred to even consider speaking to you. Without it the Prince has not recognized your presence, and hence you don’t count. When members of the Camarilla speak of status they are talking about all the status they have past acknowledged.

Now obviously there are some exemptions. Clan mates are often expected to deal with other members of their clan, even if they aren’t acknowledged yet. The Primogen of the clan especially has to deal with all members of his clan that enter the city, so they can get acknowledged. The other exception is the Caitiff.

Some Princes have decided that Caitiff in their city shall not be Acknowledged. They instead have the status "Protected." Meaning the Prince has graciously allowed them to stay in his city, and they may not to be killed unless the Prince has given permission to destroy them.

Granting and Removing Status

In order to Grant or Remove status you must do so at a large meeting of kindred. The prime example of this is when court is held. Conceivably it could be done in front of a large group of kindred, with a large amount of status (Ex: the Primogen council and all the court officers together){If you don't know if it's a "large gathering" or not, ask an ST} . It’s a really good idea to have the Harpy around when you grant or remove status (because if it’s not properly reported to the STs it doesn’t happen).

Only the Prince may grant more than one status per session to a single character.

Gaining or Losing status

If you were granted status, the person who granted you the status, and the Harpy {we will be getting a harpy very soon} must email me (Travis). If BOTH of those people do not email me the change will not go on your character sheet, and hence you won’t have the status. If someone strips you of status they and the Harpy have to email me, as with gaining status. This is will be covered under our email policy.
If you gain or lose a court position which grants you status, you must inform the me (Travis) by email, so I can get everything right on the database and website. Changes should be verified by the Harpy (ie the Harpy tells me about you gaining or losing status). However should there not be a harpy for any reason, I still make changes due to gaining or losing court positions.

Status Maximums
The maximum number of Camarilla Status Traits a Kindred may possess is determined by the character's Clan, Social Class, and possession of Station in Kindred Society.
These are the max's for any PC who doesn't have a postion in the camarilla

Social Classes

NEONATE
Characters of the thirteenth, twelfth and eleventh generations are considered to be Neonates, as are the vast bulk of Kindred who have existed less then 50 years in society. It is advised that characters created of these generations be made at less than 200 years of age, as very old Neonates tend to suffer a great deal of scorn. Characters don't often claim to be Neonates, but those without another Social Class are assumed to be Neonates by default.

ANCILLA
Characters that reach this level have proven themselves worthy of respect, and are known to be of the tenth or lower generations and having been a Kindred for not less then 50 years.

ELDER
Elder characters are known to be eighth generation or better, and to have lived in excess of 400 years. Most Elders know of one another or have heard of one another over the span of the centuries they have lived.

Who Can grant Remove Status

This is all in the book, but we keep getting questions about this, so I am putting up this clarification here.

  • The Prince and Seneschal can grant or remove anyone in the cities status by spending one temporary status point.
  • The Primogen can grant or remove status to or from characters in their clan by spending temporary status. Primogen should remember that they must loan one temporary status to the Harpy. Hence if the Primogen’s only status above Acknowledged is the positional status, they have no temporary status to spend.
  • The Harpy can remove status from anyone due to a scandal, of which there is some evidence, for free. The Harpy may return status that was striped by the Harpy (or a previous Harpy) at the cost of one temporary status per status returned.
  • Anyone with more status than another character who may remove status from the lower status person, by spending permanent status on a one-for-one basis. Or they may spend temporary status to remove temporary status for the rest of the night.
  • A clan can remove a status from one of it's elders by expending a group total of permanent status equal to the total status of the elder (Not counting Acknowledged). The Primogen council may do the same to the Prince.
  • You may grant status to anyone in your clan whom you have more than double their permanent status (Note: the minimum status to do this is 2. If you have 1 you can NOT grant it to someone with only acknowledged. Do not count acknowledged in your total status. read above). You must spend a temporary status to grant someone a permanent status.
  • Giving Status to the Prince: (as in the book): The Primogen council must burn PERMANENT status equal to the Prince's current status, to give the Prince One statue. The only other way for a Prince to gain status is from an agent of the Justicar.

Stripping Acknowledged

Acknowledged must be the last status stripped from a person. Thus if you wish to strip a person of Acknowledged you must strip all of their other status first. Also, since positional status cannot be striped (it only goes away when the person loses the position) characters with court positions cannot lose their Acknowledged status as long as they hold the position. Removing someone’s acknowledgement is very serious, because it may lead to their death. Should you wish to strip status from someone who is only Acknowledged, without removing their acknowledgement and making them prey for the Scourge, you can give them negative status.
The only exception to the above is that the Prince may strip someone of the status Acknowledged at any time for free.

Negative Status

We are expanding the Status system to include Negative Status. Negative status comes into play when someone would be striped of Status, but they have no status beyond Acknowledged. This allows characters to be punished without removing their right to be in the city. Negative Status can be used like a negative trait in an appropriate social challenge. A character with Negative Status should consider all kindred without negative status to have more status then them.

The Prince, Seneschal, and Harpy can give out negative status at any time and in the same way that they would strip status, but only when the person they are stripping of status has no status other than Acknowledged. Primogen can give negative status to a any clan member the same as removing status. Again the person gaining the negative status must have no other status other than Acknowledged. As with normal status negative status must be made public knowledge among the Kindred of the city.

A character may not have any positive status until their negative status is removed. Someone must grant them status. For each point of status granted to them, one negative status is removed instead. Once all their negative status is gone they may gain status as normal.
Negative status is not necessarily linked to Clan status. A Malkavian may have the negative status "Stupid" three times because the Prince doesn’t like the Pranks he has been playing on the Primogen council. But his clan prestige may be through the roof for the same pranks. Likewise Kindred can have a lot of status, but may be thought of poorly by his clan.

Examples of Negative Status

Oath Breaker: You refused to repay a boon. In any situation where someone is expected to trust your word, they can bid this against you as a negative social trait.

Cowardly: Someone who have left defenseless kindred to there death or has refused to help fight of the sabbat or any other battle that was going down.

Untrustworthy: Someone gave you an important mission, and you actively screwed it up, either by inaction, or intentional sabotage. No one in the Camarilla should trust you.

Stupid: Your just plain stupid. Anytime you come up with a plan, everyone else can ignore that plan. You may be well respected for beating ass, but no one will ever think your going to be on Jeopardy.

Disrespectful: You have insulted a high status kindred in the past. Since you have shown such blatant disrespect for Status, no one need show you any respect whatsoever.

Mask Breaker: You broke the masquerade in a foolish way, but the incident was covered up by other Kindred. While the situation was handled, you did nothing to help, and didn’t even thank the Kindred who saved your butt from a blood hunt. Other Kindred can feel free to ignore any plan that you have that may involve mortal contact.

Tradition Breaker: You broke one of the traditions, but the Prince let you live for some reason. As part of his punishment, he may give you this status. Anyone with this trait will likely be legitimately blood hunted if they ever screw up again. Whether or not there is any proof.

More or Less Status

It is important to note that the more status a kindred has the more important they are in Camarilla society. Each kindred’s status clearly shows where they are in the social hierarchy of the Camarilla. Hence high status kindred deserve a level of respect and demand a level of obedience. The difference between low status kindred and high status kindred is most apparent during private (kindred only) social gatherings. Status is public knowledge, therefore (unless you are new to the city) you should know exactly how much status each character has so you can act accordingly. If you don’t know how much status someone has ether ask the player OOC, or ask an ST.

If you have more status than someone else you should expect

  • Your word will always be taken as true if there is NO evidence. While this is good for casual arguments, most kindred don’t use this power to lie blatantly, or frequently. Since a higher status kindred could always come along and say you were the one lying. Also should you lie, and use your status to have people accept it as truth, and evidence comes up to the contrary, the Harpy may strip you of status for being involved in a scandal.
  • Kindred of lower status will show you proper respect. This means getting out of their way, not interrupting, allowing them to go first, etc. While status has it’s privileges this does not mean you can go around bulling people for no reason without repercussions.
  • Kindred of high status who hold a court position or are on the Primogen council can ask a lower status kindred to perform a minor task and expect it to be done without it costing a boon. This is most often done within a clan.
  • The Prince can do just about anything he wants. You are in his city. He can make any request of any lower status kindred in his city. Minor requests should be done automatically. Assuming the request isn’t suicidal, it should probably be carried out. While a kindred who is asked to do something can ask for a boon, many do not, to show their loyalty to the Prince (in hopes that he will reward them later, with something better than what they could ask for at the time).
  • The Seneschal can do the same things as the Prince, but since his position is more temporary (the Prince can remove him at any moment), more Kindred ask for boons, or double check his requests with the Prince or their Primogen. Still small maters should be taken care of without delay.

Insults

Kindred insult each other a lot in their political games. While insulting someone behind their back isn’t that dangerous, insulting someone to their face can be down right deadly. When you insult someone of higher status in public (at court), how they react is entirely up to them. Some may let it slide, to prove how above you they are. Some may ask the Prince for your head on a platter. {As Shory Boom has seen} While some clans can expect some leeway when insulting someone, they must still remember that the individual they insult may not care about the generalizations about their clan.

Situations of Equal Status

Status isn’t just a number. Each point of status you have has it’s own name. These represent how other Kindred see you. Status is only good in social situations if it’s applicable. Hence even if two kindred have the same amount of status, there may be a clear winner.

EX: Two kindred each have 1 status. Kindred A has Trustworthy, Kindred B has Feared. If they get into an argument over who is lying to a third party, that third party should assume that Kindred A is telling the truth, because they are Trustworthy. If later at party Kindred B tells Kindred A to get out of his way or he will rip him in half, Kindred A should move.
There aren’t always such clear answers to situations involving Kindred with equal status. The more they each have the harder it becomes to compare. In these cases both kindred should be considered equal to each other.

Status and Boons

We have made some changes to how Status and Boons work. According to Laws of the Night Revised when you owe a boon to someone you must also loan them a certain amount of status based on the level of the boon. This means low status kindred could never owe anyone a boon and only a few kindred in the city could actually owe someone a life boon. I don’t like this, so i changed it. When you owe someone a boon, you simply owe them a boon. Should you refuse to pay back the boon when asked to you lose the number of status equal to the level of the boon. Trivial = 1, Minor =2, Major =3, Life =4. You lose the status due to the scandal of not repaying your boon. Note you can never lose the status Acknowledged in this way. The Harpy chooses which status you lose. If you lose less status than you have you get negative status. So if you have 1 status, and you refuse to pay off a life boon, you will end with 3 negative status.

Refusing Boons

To refuse a boon is a major insult (no mater the level of the boon). To refuse any kindred who says they own you a boon is the same as saying they are worthless. If a person of authority, the Prince, Harpy, etc, says a boon is owed to you, and you refuse it, you are insulting the person who owes you the boon as being worthless and the person who said you are owed the boon as being wrong. In Camarilla society their are few insult more grievous. In addition why the hell are you refusing a boon????
