| Choosing a specialty is only the beginning. Obtaining a residency or fellowship slot often involves applying, interviewing with programs and then creating a ranked list. The residency programs also create a ranked list of applicants. These lists are submitted to the National Resident Matching Program and the results are provided to residents on the third Thursday in March. The Match schedule is available on the NRMP website. This process can be stressful and frustrating for residents-to-be and their spouses who must pay for most interview trips and are uncertain until two months before the beginning of residency where they will be going for training. Planning for the future can also be very exciting. It's important to be flexible in your planning and not to make any definate plans until the Match results are out! |
