| What is your spouse's training year? Finished Training What is your spouse's area of training? Infectious Disease How many hours per week is your spouse typically at the hospital? 90-100 Does the hospital have a support group for spouses? Yes Would you recommend this program to other spouses? No What are the best rotations? Research blocks provide relief from the relentless 6 weeks on call (from home) scheduled blocks. What are the worst rotations? Clinical months Does the program provide health insurance? Medical Describe the surrounding communities. Medium-sized city of about 80,000 people. There is plenty to do in the local area and the beaches at St. Augustine are about 1.5 hours away. Orlando is also about an hour away which makes for a fun weekend trip to Disneyworld. Florida schools are quite poor academically speaking though...I think they rank at about 47 out of 50? What else would you like other spouses to know about the program? The program has traditionally hired less fellows that recommended and the work load is simply too high during the clinical rotations. A typical day started at 7am and often did not end until 9 or 10pm. In addition, fellows were required to work every other weekend full days! This severely limited any family time and led to serious burnout! We needed additional income and my spouse was able to moonlight at the VA. Because of his hospital call schedule though, he ended up working 7 days a week for almost two solid years. I would think twice about going there until they begin to hire more fellows! |
