Analysis, Critique, Reviews, and General Resources on The Adventures of Huckleberry Finn

Amazon.com Book Reviews of The Adventures of Huckleberry Finn (Bantam Classics) (Mass Market Paperback) by Mark Twain:
- Editorial Reviews from Amazon.com: "A seminal work of American Literature that still commands deep praise and still elicits controversy, Adventures of Huckleberry Finn is essential to the understanding of the American soul. ..."
- From School Library Journal: "Grade 9 Up - All the highwater tales of Huck's journey are in this abridged version: his faked death, the Jackson Island sojourn, the Grangerford-Shepherdson feud, the Duke and the King, and his reunion with Tom Sawyer. Along the way, we are treated to a sensual feast of the sights, smells, and rhythms of the Mississippi River and the humanistic education of Huck that culminates in his assisting in Jim's escape ..."
- From Library Journal: "This paperback release of the restored edition of Finn includes four previously unknown episodes discovered in 1990 when the first half of the original handwritten manuscript was unearthed. It also includes the original illustrations and reproductions of 29 original pages.
- From Justin Kaplan: "We see at work a writer with a new-perfect ear for the right word and the right shading of idiom as he maneuvers between his purpose as a ... literary artist and the diplomatic ...
- From the Publisher: "Hilariously picaresque, epic in scope, alive with the poetry and vigor of the American people, Mark Twain's story about a young boy and his journey down the Mississippi was the first great novel to speak in a truly American voice."

The Critical Reception: Contemporary Newspaper, Magazine Reviews from Electronic Text Center, University of Virginia Library. Positive and Negative Reviews, Concord Ban Reports: Opposing "Huck", Supporting "Huck", and Neutral Accounts, The Obscene Engraving: A Contemporary Account.

Huckleberries and Humans: On the Naming of Huckleberry Finn (Abstract) by James L. Colwell, from PMLA - Journal of the Modern Language Association of America, Vol. 86, No. 1 (Jan., 1971), pp. 70-76. "An American word, 'huckleberry' originated about 1670 and appeared in some common expressions with connotations of insignificance and rusticity, both qualities appropriate for Huck. ... 'Finn' came from another Hannibal alcoholic, and was suitable both phonetically and because it was Irish."

Hill and Jim McWilliams, published by Whitson, Albany, 2002. Zehr analyses and comments on numerous sections of the book. "This work certainly provides strong evidence for the conclusion that, from a literary perspective, Twain studies are not only alive and well, but thriving."

Reviews of Huckleberry Finn. Contemporary reviews arranged in chronological order.

Satire or Evasion? Black Perspectives on Huckleberry Finn. Edited by James S. Leonard, Thomas A. Tenney, and Thadious M. Davis (Durham: Duke University Press, 1992). Reviewed by James Tysse. "An essay by John H. Wallace, 'The Case Against Huck Finn,' opens the collection ... It begins, "The Adventures of Huckleberry Finn, by Mark Twain, is the most grotesque example of racist trash ever written.' The inclusion is important because it is often used to justify Huckleberry Finn’s banning ..."

Should Huck be on the Shelf? by Robert Reese, 1998. "This novel is a tool that Mark Twain ... was using to impress the great benefits of friendship upon society ... he was trying to show how the prejudices that society places upon people could be overcome by friendship ... Friendship does not need to be banned from our society; neither does The Adventures of Huckleberry Finn."

Silencing Huck Finn by Douglas L. Howard, assistant professor of English at Suffolk County Community College, Selden, NY. "The novel has been a source of controversy, especially in recent years, for its consistent use of 'the N-word' and for the racism that, its opponents charge, it either implicitly or explicitly endorses. For that reason, the book has been challenged, censored, or banned by a substantial number of school districts in the United States, it has been condemned by the NAACP, and it has even been the focus of a U.S. Circuit Court of Appeals case. According to John Wallace, a former public school administrator and one of the novel's fiercest critics, it 'is the most grotesque example of racist trash ever written.'"

The Adventures of Huck Finn (PG) by Hal Hinson, Washington Post Staff Writer. "To say that Mark Twain's The Adventures of Huckleberry Finn has been 'Disney-fied' and turned into a bland, action-adventure film for kids is a grotesque understatement. As it is, this real-life adaptation couldn't have had less reality if it had been animated. ... By now, audiences are so used to seeing this story of life on the Mississippi diminished at the movies and on TV that the true radical spirit of Samuel Clemens's satiric original has been lost."

Imaging "Slavery" in Mark Twain's Books. Fight over Huck Finn continues: Ed School professor wages battle for Twain classic by Alvin Powell, Harvard University Gazette. "Mark Twain knew darn well what he was doing when he wrote The Adventures of Huckleberry Finn: he was pokin' at a beehive. And for more than one hundred years, the bees have obliged, swarming out with criticism of the tale of the friendship between a poor white boy, Huckleberry Finn, and an escaped slave, Jim. ... One of the difficulties in teaching Huckleberry Finn, Chadwick said, is that parents and teachers who object to its inclusion in the curriculum sometimes view the text through a lens colored by their own experiences, or by their community's experiences, or by the strained present of race relations."

Why Huck Finn Belongs in Classroom by Jocelyn Chadwick. Harvard Education Letter, Past Issues. "Stereotypes in his portrayal of the character Jim, excessive use of the racial slur 'nigger,' and a paternalistic attitude toward African Americans are among the charges made against Twain by his would-be banners. Are these charges valid, and if so, do they implicate Mark Twain as a racist?" Jocelyn Chadwick, an African American, is assistant professor at the Harvard Graduate School of Education, and author of The Jim Dilemma: Reading Race in Huckleberry Finn.
