This fawn was found by people attanding a festival in Birds Hill Park, Manitoba. Although this fawn was alert and uninjured, the people mistakingly assumed the fawn was abandoned because they could not see a mother deer nearby. They took it home to their apartment and contacted Wildlife Rescue the following day when the fawn was calling relentlessly for it's mother and food. As they were unable to recall the location where they found the fawn, volunteers could not return it to it's mother and it had to be cared for at the centre. After several months of feeding and caring for the fawn, it was successfully released to the wild . This fawn was not abandoned and should not have been picked up by the people, although they were well intentioned. Mother deer purposely hide their fawns and watch them closely from a significant distance away. You will usually never see a mother deer standing near her young fawn. They know exactly where their fawn is located and will return to feed it only when safe to do so and often only at night in order to avoid luring predators to its young. Don't let yourself become the predator!!! All wild mothers hide their young and will leave them unattended for periods of time. NEVER remove uninjured baby animals from the wild!!! |
