How I protect my PC

  1. Since I have a broadband connection (DSL, Cable Modem, etc.) (Not dialup), I have purchased a hardware firewall that supports at a minimum the following:
    • DMZ host (You can select a PC to be unprotected by the firewall, this is good for a honey pot PC
    • IPSec and PPTP Pass Through (good for VPN access to your job site from your home network. You still need a VPN concentrator at work and client software on your home PC.).
The FortiNet Firewall can set up a VPN tunnel to your home network and protect it from Virus attacks as well as hacker attacks.
A cheaper solution, the LinkSys BEFVP41, supports 50 VPN tunnels as well as Dynamic DNS.
    • Port Forwarding - With this you can have game or other server software ports accessible from the ineternet, without leaving your computer wide open.

  2. A software firewall like Zone Alarm.

  3. A firewall log reporting tool like MyNetWatchman. With this tool, hacker attempts on your PC are reported to the appropriate authorities.
"My Net Watchman" can also read logs created by WallWatcher, which monitors logs from hardware firewalls like (2Wire, Buffalo, Cisco, D-Link, Linksys, m0n0wall, Netgear, Netscreen, Speedstream, Symantec, and ZyXEL).
I personally use, a LinkSys router, WallWatcher and My Net Watchman.
If you would like to support the volunteers at myNetWatchman with a contribution of any size, please do so by clicking here.

NOTE to FusionOne users: I found that the newer Firmware versions for my LinkSys BEFSR41 router, breaks FusionOne. I had to go back to an older revison level to get fusion one to work again. It was broken even if I put my PC in the DMZ.

  4. A Virus scanning tool Like AVG that support heuristics (looks for virus like activity), which may protect your system from viruses that have not been identified yet.
