WHAT IS SPOG? A long overdue explanation
After so many confused references to Spog, it seemed only fair to demystify the name and organization, at least to those who visit the website. To start from the beginning, here follows the history of the name. It began with the members of Spog meeting each other, getting along really well, and going everywhere in huge groups - the only convenient way to refer to these groups (aside from as "the school bus") was as the sponsor group. However, repeating such a mouthful over and over can get to be a tongue twister, and so one night a Spog citizen
decided to shorten the name. In the grand tradition of Pomoniac acronyms, "spog" was born. Shortly thereafter, several members of Spog were eating dinner together when the conversation turned to the name of the United States of America. More specifically, it turned to the fact that for a world power, "the United States of America" was a highly uncreative title. Imagine Germany being the United Provinces of Europe. It was quickly agreed that despite the low level of creativity, "the United States of America" was
far too ingrained in the hearts of its citizens to be changed at such a late date, and so the Spog members did the next best thing. They seceded. The new college, an island in the middle of Pomona College of population 20, was naturally named Spog in honor of the circumstances under which it was born, and the fact that its population consists of the original spog. You can visit Spog in front hall, second floor Blaisdell - but please, check your vegetables for fruit flies before carrying them across the border.
